Has anyone else tried this? You firmly pat your cat just above the base of the tail. Seems to really turn them on.

Male cats in particular seem to love this. For one of our cats, the firmer the patting, the better! In fact it's more like whacking than patting.

Patting, scratching, whatever at the base of the tail, where it's very sensitive, is extremely enjoyable to a cat. So much so that some cats will bite because it's more than they can take.

I don't think I want to try it. It sounds like hitting the cat.

Well our guy loves it! He'll climb up on your lap and back his rear up, demanding that you pat him. When you do, he gets this goofy look on his face, squinting his eyes and grinning, as if to say "Ohhhhhh that feels Sooooo gooood!"

I know exactly what you mean ... isn't it hysterical!?
I know you aren't hitting your kitty, just a good firm pat .... no harm done!

My cats don't respond to that. I have a friend who grew up with cats in his house who was surprised when they actually lowered their behinds and zipped out from under his hand when he scratched them there.

I personally have never whacked my cat's lower back but he does love to lean into the scratching as it gets closer to the tail. I have also found a sweet spot at the bottom of his ear that get's him going so much his back leg starts to go into scratching mode. If you have ever seen your cat his his hind leg to scratch the inside of their ears then picture this but he's scratching at thin air while i scratch/rub vigorously just outside his ear. It's hillarious.

I have seen some cats that will almost BEG for this - it's hysterical!! I often give Sunday a vigourous scratch there because she loves it and it makes her drool!

There was a thread once a while ago that talked about this, and how many cats absolutely adore it. It's wonderful to be able to do something they love so much...
