Over the last two months, Racer has steadily shown me he just doesn't feel good. This was a deep founder this time, and he is not rebounding, and even though the vet is treating the symptoms, the cause was never found.

So I have decided to jump off the conventional path once again. The holistic measures I used when he first foundered, brought him back, but now there is something not quite right about him. He tells me everyday when I go out in the pasture that he isn't doing wel.

I had a student of Dr. Marvin J. Cain DVM out today. She gave Racer a special test and we are going to put him on holistic horse feed now, actually several.

I hope to see results soon enough. I leave here in about 2 weeks time to attend the Cat Writers' Conference in San Francisco. I will be gone three days. I would like to leave here knowing that while I was gone, my horse isn't going to crash on my husband and leave him wondering what to do now.

I had wondered how he was doing when you told me you'd had his shoes taken off. I had asked if that was good or bad news

I will keep my fingers crossed that the change in feed will have a positive result for him.

I forget what "founder" means for a health problem, but I hope you get the results in time Mary Anne.

Sending prayers your way, MA. It's too bad he just cannot seem to lick this
Since I know zero about horses, once they have this, are they susceptible from then on?

They call it "prone to founder" You are supposed to keep the horse on a dry lot, no grass, no grain. Keep support on the feet- but it is winter time and I wanted these shoes pulled, because he is going to lose them in the mud anyway. So the vet and farrier agreed.

he just isn't himself. His ears are laid back all the time, he walks to stiffly, his foot, you can see the bulge where the bone is ready to slide through.
He almost knocked the barn down the other day in an attempt to scratch and as I watched him, I thought of cats pulling out there fur in response to pain. I really think that he has something majorly wrong with him that they will never find (because veterinary science hasn't caught up with horse owners yet). It's like he is chasing a pain and just wanting it OUT of his body.

He responded to pain in his stomach, his thyroid and his immune system is low.

So here is hoping these new feeds will help him turn yet another corner.

I just read this now and am really sorry to hear this.
Keeping my fingers crossed that the alternative therapies will help him once again.

I hate that helpless feeling when you want to help, but don't know how.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the holistic food helps - actually, that anything helps him. It must be so depressing for you to see him in constant poor health. It's so frustrating when you can't find a permanent cure, and your baby gives you that, "I don't feel good, Mom!" look.

I am so sorry. I do hope this makes the difference for Racer, and he can finally heal.

Founder is a swelling in the feet. Since the horse's foot is a hoof, when it swells, the hoof limits the space, and the blood vessels to the foot are constricted. Like wearing tight boots you cannot remove over painful swollen feet. Very painful for the horse. Poor Racer, he has survived a long time with this illness. I am so glad you have a new path to try to help him heal. Prayers for his full recovery, and just for him to quickly feel good again. Also for your continued wisdom on making the right decisions for dear Racer!

MaryAnne, could Racer possibly have cushings disease? My Princess had this and kept foundering. THEN there was no hope but nowdays there is medicine for it. Good luck!
