Alright. So I'm sure everyone is aware that I'm a graphic designer. I'm doing a book cover for an author who is a self proclaimed graphics person, and he sent me a bunch of low quality images- and now is complaining about how is boog cover looks. Of course, he thinks his stuff is amazing, and the reason the cover is crap is totally my fault. I've "done something" with his files. I'm fed up! so I created a similar file to his (he wants his cover to be a licence plate, basically, and has "crafted" one in photoshop, that is to him the god of all photoshop creations.) in half the time, and it looks both more realistic and is a higher quality. Now I could be mean and do the cover with my photoshop work, just to prove a point, OR I could quietly do it with his files and gloat that if done with my own, the cover would be infinitely better (although still crap, because the cover itself is sort of a crap idea- he wants it his way. Why didn't he make it himself, if he thinks he's such hot poop!

Well, it's tough but you've got to keep the client happy. Remember though that you're putting your name on the work, so it'll reflect badly on you if it's not good quality. Insist on the higher quality image!

Apparently not only is he a self-proclaimed graphics person, I assume he is also self-publishing the book? In that case there's not a whole lot you can do, because yep, you do need to keep him happy (no matter how little he deserves it.)

In the "real" world of publishing, authors usually have NO idea who is doing their covers, or what they're going to look like and very, very seldom have any input whatsoever into the design process of the book. I've spoken with a few (knew a couple fairly well) book-cover illustrators and one of their biggest beefs would be that frequently they would get like one page from the publisher on which to base an illustration and get their comps out. Frequently this would result in a cover that looked like it had nothing to do with the book
