Yes, but it is also connected with tone of voice. They know the combination of their name and my voice. They don't respond if I call someone else and they rarely respond if someone else calls them. It seems to be very specific.

I do know that most experts suggest you call your cat one thing and stick to it. Not that I do that either ... My cats have a tonne of nicknames.

Spike does come when he's called, but he's definitely responding to the tone, and not to his name (because, as I've said, he has a lot of nicknames ... he'd come if you yelled "pill time!"). Oz, on the other hand, is more likely to respond to his own name, but only if he's in the mood. He'll always look at you when you say his name (and ignore other names or words), but he won't necessarily make an effort to get up and come over to you. He's laaaaazy.

My parents' cat, PJ, won't come when she's called, but if my younger sister sits down at the piano and plays a certain sequence of notes, she'll respond to that. And it's funny, because she never gets treats or pets or anything when she responds to the music; it seems like she just likes sitting with my sister when she plays the piano. A feline music afficionado, perhaps?
Both my boys names end sounding like "E"...but they do know the difference. That does`nt always mean that they come when they are called....they are cats you know...and not dogs...so they know they don`t have to come on demand....but even if they don`t budge ...thier ears will give them away that they did hear and understood which one was being addressed. Their ears just can`t resist the twitch-turn when I say their names....and they won`t do it if i call the other one. (We`ve actually "played" calling their names just to watch their ears turn toward the sound .)

Of course they learn their names. Not only do they know their own name they know each others names. I say where's your brother or where's max and shamus tries to find max or the other way around. they also know the name of my parents dog. My cats have a fairly extensive vocab. They understand wanna eat, come on up, get down, come here, you want fresh water, and wanna go to bed (my cats go to sleep when I go to sleep.) they are only 14 months old so I hope to build on their vocab.

I also want to point out that I call max several different ways, I call him max, maximus, maxwell and little buddy and he responds to all of them. Poor shamus only has one name.

My older cat, Phoebe, knows her name and comes when called 9 out of 10 times.

My younger cat, Scout, will come to her mom's name if the mood strikes her but will come when called 7 out of 10 times- to her own name of course.

Not only do all three of mine know their own names, two of them knew their names before I got them and responded to my use of it right away. I tried to change Red Cat's name to Caruso, but since he already answered to Red Cat, it was just too inconvenient to change and I gave up.

They learned each other's names quickly, too, but I deliberately tried to teach them. When all three were around me, I'd pet each one's head in turn and say their name as I did so. I've also started trying to teach them other words like ear and nose by touching each of their ears and noses (and mine) in turn as I said the word. I don't know if I'm getting anywhere with it yet, though, as I've only done it a few times. But since they understand such things as "I'm going to bed, Red Cat, if you'd like to come with me," surely they can learn simple words.

yeah my cat's name is penelope and maybe it's just too long or something? but she doesnt really come to penny either. sometimes she'll look but i dont know if it is her laziness or general disobiedience that im mistaking for just not knowing her name.

that is AWESOME about the notes. i want to teach my cat that, like an oompa loopma w/ that flute! COOL

Bubbles is 12 weeks old tomorrow, but he does know his name. I wasn't too sure, when I let him out for the first time. I wasn't going to, until I was sure he knew his name, just in case he decided to run off. But he will come running when he is outside and I call his name. He ignores me completley when he is indoors. Possibly thinking "you can see me, what are you calling my name for?"
Not sure at this point though, if it is his name he knows, or just my voice. I just stick to calling his name, so he gets used to it.
My other cat always came running for his name. When he stayed out for too long, or when I wanted him in before bed time, I called and he came running, sometimes I had to wait for a while, if he was further away, but he always heard.

Fraggle and Angel both know their names and their nicknames. They know they're in trouble if we use their middle names too, Fraggle Yoda (named for her resemblance to Yoda when she lays her ears flat out to the sides) and Angel Marie.

PJ knew her name before we got her, so as soon as she got home and we started calling her, she'd come. As she gets older, she's a little more lazy (and has tortitude!), so sometimes she'll just stare instead of moving her butt.

Teddy knows his name now; I'm not sure if he did before we got him. He'll come for his name, or if I make kissy noises - those get him to jump in my lap and curl up.

Lona respondes to Lona only
Mossy responds to Mossy and monkey.

Scooby respondes and I am not making this up "stupid", always when dealing with her its "stupid cat why did you turn over the water dish".

So all I have to do is yelled STUPID dinner time and she comes running. Its really really funny.

Now my dogs I can say "go find mom" or "wake up sami" and off they go, they know exactly what I am telling them, my cats possibly know but they don't care unless it has something to do with food.

I'd like to think that my cats know thier names but they only respond to them when they're doing something bad. Like they're on the table and I say in a clear elevated, but not yelling, you know just louder as if to be heard across a room voice "Buttons" and he jumps down and runs over to the cat carrier and curls up inside. They know when they're bad, they just need reminding. It's unfortunate that their names are only useful when they are bad.

It's funny cause I was just thinking of this. I re-named my cat Tola, and I have had her for 3 weeks, and just the other day she was looking down at the ground and I said "Tolaaaaaa" and she looked up at my obviously recognizing her name. I was surprised that she got it so fast!

My cats will look when I call their names, but as far as coming over - well, they're typical cats. One of them will come running when I yell " Bibbit - Milk!" because she knows she's going to get kitty milk. Another well come running every time when I yell "Dayday - treat!" I've heard that cats are smarter than dogs, so there' no reason to believe they can't learn their name. As far as reacting to it, mine just do what they please...

Chuckie, Winnie and Stormy know their names. I don't have to call "kitty, kitty" I just call their names and they come.

Both Jingles and Jangles know their names. Although, Jangles will only come whenever he wants.
