Hello folks .. I just joined up so it is good to be here and HI to everyone.

We have a new Queen cat ... she just had 6 healthy kittens on Oct. 30th ( it is now Nov 3rd ). Question is ... how long after having kittens is it until she can get pregnant again?

We have been trying to keep her indoors pending: 1. Weaning the Kittens and 2. Getting her spayed.

HOWEVER, (heh ) .. she was very insistant dashed out the front door today, before we could react, for about an hour. There is a black Tomcat in the area ( who we think is the father of this litter ).

Any help is appreciated.

I would think only 4 days after giving birth, it would be unusual or her to accept a male who tried to get near her, to be honest. But, I am sure someone else will have more solid advice on that front. I am not totally sure about how early they can become pregnant again.

However, one thing that you should really be trying to do is keep her isolated with her kittens right now, as much as possible. I would have her in a closed room with all that she needs (food, water, litterbox) so that she is not roaming the other areas of the house (giving her less opportunities to get out). She may not be thrilled at first, but she really needs to be protected from other animals...after all she is vulnerable to more than just pregnancy right now, after just giving birth. She is vulnerable to infection, attack from other animals who sense she has a new litter and feel threatened by her as well as all of the other dangers that come from being outdoors.

Good luck to you and congrats on the new litter, how exciting! Post pics if you have an opportunity. We always love to see the new 'babies'!

Thanks for the information ... We hope she is not pregnant again. I will get some photos and post them for all to see. Mom cat seems to be an excellent mother and tolerates our being around the kittens ( as long as we don't overstay our welcome ).

Oh, by the way, how does one upload photos to this forum?

Hi Ron,

I wouldn't think it's impossible for her to get pregnant so soon after... I've seen it after. But if she did get pregnant and you have her spayed in the next few weeks, the vet could terminate the pregnancy at the same time - that's what happened with my girl Babs.

As for uploading pics (and please do!), you can go to www.tinypic.com and follow instructions. It's quite simple. Once you've uploaded your pictures, you can copy and paste the links on here.

Ron....I'm not sure exactly when a cat can go back into heat...but I would certainly recommend that you keep her and her kittens in a secure room until she has been spayed. Since she was able to get out once..she will inevitibly try again and that time she may be back in heat so best not to risk it. If you need a low cost clinic for when her kittens are weaned and it is time to have her spayed, let me know and I'll look up some low cost clinics.

It doesn't matter if she is in heat or not, cats are induced ovulators. The act of copulation triggers the release of the eggs, so if there is sperm present, she can become pregnant again this soon.

My current foster Sugartoes had 3 litters in 6 months, as a cat who was allowed to go outside when she still had kittens. Since it takes about 65 days for a pregnancy (I think), she must have gotten pregnant real quick. On the last litter, which is when I was fostering her, she ended up losing 3 out of 5 kittens. So the repeat pregnancies are hard on Mom and kits, too.

The only way to keep your girl in is to put her in a nice bedroom, where she can care for her kittens. Then if she wants to try to sneak out, she has to get through 2 doors! And when the babies are 6-8 weeks old, she can be spayed, even if pregnant. Hopefully she is not!

If anything happens to her outside, you will have to hand raise the kittens. I would really watch that, and try to keep her in the house.
