This happened near enough where I live to get reported in our local paper: http://www.delawareonline.com/apps/p...NEWS/511030347

24 horses were trapped in a barn on fire. They all died. The only fortunate thing is that they say from where they found the horses' remains they probably did not suffer long. I couldn't read the whole article. But it said something about there being a lot of combustibles in the barn with the horses. Poor horses!!!!

Me too....I've been thinking about them all day! They were helpless...and it sounds like the people were just powerless too!

We just lost 34 horses in a large barn fire in Kane County (west of Chicago) a month or so ago. Very sad indeed.

That is awful! But to say not to store combustibles in the barn-usually the combustible item in a barn is the hay!

DH is very careful to store the hay so that air can circulate around it, to prevent it from starting a fire. But most people cannot store the hay in a separate barn from the horses!

That is a terrible tragedy. Poor babies, now they are prancing over the Rainbow Bridge. And the poor old man who turned 74 on the day of the fire. Prayers for his peace of mind!

Quoted from the article:

The horses -- all Thoroughbreds being trained to race -- probably did not suffer for long, said Kathleen Anderson, Fair Hill's resident veterinarian.

She walked through the smoldering rubble of the barn Wednesday morning to account for the dead animals. No humans were injured in the fire.

"I'm sure there was some emotional distress, but I don't think there was a lot of pain," Anderson said. She found most of the horses' remains inside their stalls -- a sign, she said, that they likely fell unconscious from carbon monoxide poisoning before the barn collapsed.

"That's a blessing," Anderson said

It's sounds like it was all over with very quickly. But those poor horses
it's still sooooo sad!

Thank you for providing enough info. so that we didn't have to log onto the link to know what happened. Kudos for you who were brave enough to read it.
What a terrible, terrible tragedy.....
I'm glad to know that it's supposed that the horses were overcome by CO fumes, first.
A couple of years ago, a wolf preserve went unevacuated because the county & state ACO's felt understaffed with qualified officers to help rescue 29 wolves & wolf-mixes. My dad who worked for the county had been doing extra duty for the county, helping rescue horses. When he got off his shift, he drove to another wolf/wildlife rescue who had offered their staff & cages & all the restraint gear necessary, and a local rancher donated a long horsetrailer & truck to haul the wolves, but they were denied access to the wolves, although they were at least able to evacuate some goats & some loose dogs. My dad is still upset about those poor wolves!
How much worse for people who were responsible for those horses and I do pray for their emotional healing....
