Why would he put this in his mouth?

So tonight my husband and I were playing Yahtzee and we have an extra dice sitting in the box. Rocky, my almost 2 year old, vision impaired cat comes up on the table to watch. Next thing you know he has the dice in his mouth, tries to bite it a few times and spits it out. *sigh* I can no longer defend him against my husband when he says this cat isn't that bright. He has never put anything IN his mouth before besides toys, food and maybe one of those milk thingys. He is even suspicious of food before he eats- sniffs it carefully.
Any ideas about this one? I don't keep anything out in my house that I know he will eat, but now I'm worried that he may do something real dumb. He has always been a bit orally fixated- he's a licker, and sometimes he will chew on lampshades. He also occ will bite at pens that are sticking up in a holder.
I wish I could just think that he was trying to get in on the game the only way he knew how!

if you were eating while you were playing he may have smelled food on the dice

Well, if he is vision impaired it's probably the only way he can work out what stuff is. It's the same as little babies - they put everything in their mouths, it's their way of learning. So I would think that your little boy put the dice in his mouth to find out what they were - if he could eat them or not, if they were toys etc...

So now you DO have a defence against your husband! He's not dumb - he's just utilising his other senses because he can't see too well

Yes, exactly. Remember, cats have a scent gland in their mouths too, which is part of the reason why they use their mouths to check out unfamiliar things. You also may notice your cats mouth open a little when sniffing something. Same thing. My little girl Cleo picks up dice when we play Backgammon. She just thinks the dice are toys. After all, she is just being a kitty.

Well, we weren't eating, and it's just funny cause we have played with the dice tons of times before... He's just a silly little goober I guess. I tried to use the excuse that he was trying to play, but hubby wasn't buying it. Your explanations make some sense- its just kind of random that he put them all the way in his mouth!

My RB kitty Tigger used to do stuff like that when he went blind. As others have said they have to use their other senses to figure out the world. (that is a pretty cute story by the way!

I'm sorry, this is a cute thread. Because you were playing dice with your "paws", he wanted to mark the dice with his scent and he probably looked at the dice as if they were a toy or prey. My little Saba puts everything in her mouth - the last item was a Tums! She found it and ate it. I got on the line with poison control because I didn't know better, but all she did was fart all night.

WOW!!! I was affraid that something was wrong with Blaze.
I bought a crate for her to use after her spay and she went up to it with her mouth open a bit and just stood there.I thought,"she had lost it".

Blaze will put things in her mouth also. She LOVES to pick up erasers and I have to keep an eye to make sure she doesn't get them.

He loves Rocky, I know he does. It's always been that Zakk has been more "his" cat, and Rocky is more "my" cat. I'd be the first to admit that Zakk is definitely smarter than Rocky. Rocky has his own special qualities- he is very affectionate and very playful. He does have some odd habits- I think I have probably posted more about his behaviour than Zakk.
