A lady posted on an Australian forum I'm on, that her cat is off his food, is drooling, drinking TONNES of water and won't let her go near him. She was worried that he had eaten a baited rat and also stated that she couldn't afford vet care.

I replied, "How is the cat now? Do you own a TV, mobile phone, microwave, stereo? You can get cash for these and take him to the vet. Please do it soon - it sounds like he is really suffering. You wouldn't let a child continue like this."

I was told to get down off my soap box and perhaps she should sell one of her kids.

I am so, so sick of people describing their ill cats symptoms and it's obvious the cat is very ill or really suffering and they end the post with, "But I can't afford to go to the vet." It's so very sad when the cat ends up dying. Surely you can budget for veterinary expenses or have a credit card especially for this purpose? Something.

*End whine.*

Yep it is frustrating. Happens to often and takes me off my tolerance meter pretty darn quick. I hope the woman does take the cat to the vet. Sounds like he got into something nasty or toxic

I sold a stereo once because of my cat Oreo.. I had JUST had Justice (he was 4 days old and premature) and pawned my stereo to take her to the ver because she was bitten by a brown recluse!.....

It's so aggravating when people are like that. That was a perfect reply, Tania. I hope you made her ashamed enough to get the cat medical attention.

That is just so frusterating!

I can't believe that woman can't take her poor cat to the vet, especially while he is visiably so very sick! How can you just sit and watch your cat become sicker and sicker and not want to do anything to help? I mean-what if that was her child? I treat Harley as if he is my child, I would sell my furniture if something were to happen and I didn't have the direct funds to help him, I would sell anything to him to get him some care.

I dont understand some people....Harley is much more important to me, especially more than some object I got at a store. I could never put a price on Harley's vet care!!

A girl on my message board just posted that her boyfriends sister had her teenaged cat put to sleep because she became ill, and rather than spend a bunch of money at the Vet's to get her well, she took her cat in and had her put to sleep. I kept my cool, but I have to say, it just makes me FURIOUS!

Ugh people like that make me sick. There is pretty much ALWAYS a way. If they can't afford the vets care, they shouldn't have pets, simple as that. Of course there is always the exception where maybe someone finds themself thrown into a bad financial situation after they've had pets for some time, but even then they can usually work something out with a vet. And to be so rude about your advice is just unbelievable. Someone willing to offer help and advice in her hour of need and all she can think of to do is retaliate with cruel remarks? Dozy mare doesn't know what's good for her or her cat. Ooooooo I'm mad now!!

I couldnt agree more. I dont care if you have to steal/you make sure your animal is taken care of. If you cant afford an animal you shouldnt have one. I know this sounds harch but tough cookies, thats the way it is at least in my mind. If it was up to me not taking your cat to the vet when it is sick would be a crime and should be prsecuted vigourously. If you refused to take a child to the Dr and it dies you would be thrown in jail. Why not for animals too?

I guess it was one of those things that she'd rather not have heard - it's like giving them the truth - why ask for it if you're not going to like it?

My goodness-the meaness of some people last yr I when had Tommie the stray (who lived in the garage) and he was shot and the best option was amputation I didn't ask how much I said just do it!!! And a couple of months later when he got sick FeLV I had them run the test again-we were going to do blood transfusion-I wasn't thinking of cost.
Sometimes I get sick and tired of people saying they don't have any money-well do you have cable TV?? Mobile Phone?? Eating at fast food restaurants?? Hello think of how you are spending your money sometimes!!

It's amazing what people DON'T think of. It makes you wonder what is so wonderful on their TV that they wouldn't give it up for a few months just to pay a vets bill - are they recieving transmissions from extra terrestrials or something? As far as I can tell, having cable or satellite or whatever just boosts your tv from 5 channels of trash, to 405 channels or trash that's repeated over and over ad nauseam. Would it really be such a devastating sacrifice to make for an animal you "love"? You say you love an animal, you gotta prove it.

My thought when I've seen this is well then why did you ask for opinions??

I think your answer was spot on...what is worse is when they do nothing, keep posting details on how the cat is getting sicker and sicker, then post wanting sympathy after it dies. Sorry to be so blunt but that kind of situation pulls your heart to pieces because you are helpless.

It is one thing to do the best you can and ask for, need support in an upsetting or terminal situation, it is another asking for a through the screen diagnosis, opinions and then to get angry because you don't like the answer you got!

Some people.....if they really loved thier animals!....

I had a friend in college who's husband's ex-wife had thier 3 dogs put to sleep just to spite him! CAN VETS EVEN ALLOW THAT!?!!?! She didn't even call to see if he might want them! (Which he did!) My ex-stepmother put one of thier dogs to sleep when she moved off to Chicago with her new boyfriend because she 'couldn't' take her with them and Dad had just lost his job and had thier other dog. Missy had been very abused before they rescued her so she was extreemly timid...so she didn't want to try to find her a new home...so that was her decision.....

Not much you can do in this situation. She can sue the husband for the financial value of the animal since tech animals are considered property and maritial property is too be split = when marriage dissolved. You may be able to charge for theft if you can prove the animal belonged to her. Unfort. it is not considered animal cruelty because putting your animals to sleep is humane.

I wouldn't have thought you would be able to put your pets down just to spite another person - Unless there is a medical reason for it!!

Some people are just dumb!

Kumbulu, just out of interest what was this Australian forum? I'd like to check it out!
