Hi all,

I have a kitten who is 5 months old. He is great, very lovey, but definitely has some interesting features. He loves to play fetch which is great but he seems to have a new trait now: He likes to take his fake mice, or any toy, and literally drop in in my water, milk, tea, coffee, and even chuck it on my plate of food I am eating.
Any one have this problem or know why he might be doing this?

Thanks for any thoughts,

Festus drops her toys in the water bowl sometimes. I think it is to hide them from Garfield. Then she has fun fishing the toy back out. Sounds like your kitty is doing the same behavior, but trying to engage you in his play. Maybe an extra water bowl on the floor, and you can play fetch and toss the toy into the water for him?

Putting a lid on the drink might help some too.

Sounds like you have a very social, very fun kitty! Congrats!

There was a post a few days ago about a cat who was drowning toys in its water dish, and I know I've heard about that kind of behavior before. If you look around a bit, I'm sure you'll find that thread, and the explanation for that kind of behavior. A cat drowning toys in your food/water is probably for the same reasons, but also acknowledging you as a caretaker or a buddy.

Thank you. I will try to find the thread. Dr. Watson, Watson for short, is very social and quite the character.

I've heard of other cats doing this, but only in their own dishes. It's a funny habit but I am sure it's quite annoying for you!

Awww - He's playing fetch with you!! Thats very cute!! Hehe - Must have been a surprise the first time he did it!!!

If you want him to stop, I would suggest taking the toy away - Just hide it for a while so he can't get at it. Then he'll begin to realise that dropping it in your food/drink means he doesn't get it anymore and hopefully will give up!!

Dr. Watson sounds soooo entertaining!
But I can understand how frustrating that can be for you!
JC used to have a thing for wrapped candies, and used to drop them in the water dish & tried to fish them out until he stole a coughdrop from my open purse! The coughdrop dissolved, but he tried a taste of the water before I could stop him, and had the biggest YUCK experience of his life.
I'm curious about what Dr. Watson's motive is here - what is his immediate reaction when he does this? Do you think it's to engage you in play; for shock value; or just good-natured sharing of toys? If you could get pics, we'd LOVE to see them!

*giggle* Sorry, don't know why he's doing this but it's pretty cute and funny. It would make me laugh but I know that the bf would go nuts...lol

Sashka likes to come and stick her paw in whatever you're eating - rendering it unable to be eaten anymore by YOU. She doesn't do it anymore, though, since she learnt that wrecking my meal doesn't mean she gets it when I don't want it anymore!

I think she's trying to FEED you! Really! The toys, when you think about it, are surrogates for the small creatures she would be hunting if she were a wild kitty... so maybe she's capturing them, subduing them, and offering them to you for dinner! What a little sweetheart!
