since I can't search... sorry if this is answered somewhere already.

So Teddy is about to finish his course of medication for a URI. However, even though the sneezing has stopped, his nose is definitely still stuffy and it makes funny noises when it gets more clogged. But he's back to his normal self - eating lots, playing, etc. etc, so the medication so far has made him a lot better. However, I've never experienced a URI that stuck around through a course of medication.

So, do cats get persistent, long term URI's? If so, what's the treatment for that? He's already been on Clavamox and another medication I don't have in front of me right now (C---amine), so I didn't know if there was something stronger that vets give if a URI isn't completely clearing up. Teddy will be going back to the vet in a few days, but I'm curious in the meantime.

Thanks!

After three bottles of 2 different antibiotics, my kitties are still sneezing. Their uri symptoms have definitely lessened, but they are still there. From the info I've gotten, some cats are just chronic and almost always show symptoms.

The stray I brought home in early august has been treated 3 times with meds and he still has bad coughing attacks and sneezes up big hunks of stuff. He was really sick and starved and dehidrated when I got him home, I was worried if he would make it at all. I guess he is always going to have problems, any way it looks like he is not alone with having the stuff hang on so long. Vet thinks he is about 3 years old. I am turning into a big softy in my old age, I feel so bad when our pets are not well. Sorry I don't have any good advice to add to help.

If the URI is caused by the herpes virus, then it may come and go over the years. You can try giving your cat(s) Interferon (prescribed by the vet) to boost the immune system. Some people have had good luck with Lysine as well. I'm not sure the dosages, so I'd check with your vet.

500 mg of lysine works for my kitty.
