I keep seeing a commercial to invest in an Alpaca farm and raise Alpacas. Ok, I have no intention of doing that, but it made me curious. What do you do with an Alpaca? I mean no disrespect to Alpacas or their owners, but I mean are they pets, raised for milk, meat, or what?

the only people i know who have an alpaca have it as a pet-- but they have a bunch of "different" animals-- I have heard that alpacas are raised for their "wool" which is used to make some clothes although i have never seen an alpaca coat or sweater. I would think that they could be raised for meat as well but then i have never seen or heard of alpaca meat anywhere.

lol maybe someone with more experience or information will come along.

Wool makes sense. I didn't even think of that.

Alpacas are raised for their fiber. It is warmer than wool. Alpacas usually cost in the ten's of thousands of dollars for a quality fiber. I have a friend who has an alpaca farm. Nice creatures, but VERY expensive!!! She takes their fiber and spins it into yarn and then it is sold. Nice to work with if you're into fibers.

Thanks! If you can't find the answer on TCS, there must not be one!
I'm happy with that answer too! Those cute Alpacas don't get hurt!
