I was laying in bed tonite watching tv and tuffy crawled up on my chest and layed down, so I was petting him and I noticed he felt real warm and he was shivering. I assume a good sign he has a high temp? The only other time he would crawl on my chest is when I first got him and he was real sick so I took this as another sign he don't feel good again.

You can't feel fever in cats from outside, thermometer in rectum is the only way as far as I know. Of course he could be sick anyway, or maybe he just felt like a hug.

The only accurate way to tell if the cat has a fever is to take it. They have special pet thermometers and if you have never done it before, you need to be very careful. It is wise to ask your vet how to do it correctly because inserted at the wrong angle or to deep you can cause trauma to the cat.

If a cat is ill, one of the early signs of fever is dehydration, so the third eyelid will creep over the eye.

My kitten just got over a fever. He was extremely lethargic, wouldn't eat or drink anything, and just looked misearable. I took him to the vet and got antibiotics to help prevent further infections, but unfortunately there's nothing we could do for the fever since he is so young. He got better in a few days and is now back to wreaking havoc around the apartment.

I beg to differ. Mycat yowdy had a very high fever a few months ago 106. Myself and my husband both knew he had a fever. He definately felt much warmer then normal.Just like when our kids have a fever sometimes we Doctor Moms can tell ... He also was sleeping more and in his not normal places.
I do agree though of course taking the cats temp is the way to tell for sure. But if your cat feels warmer then normal alone with shivering he for sure has a fever.

Have to agree with being able to tell if your cat has a fever.

One of my guy's was running a fever of 105 and I knew immediately when I touched him that something was very wrong...his skin felt unusally warm. Off to the vet. & sure enough he had a fever & was put on antibiotics.
