Best litter for small spaces

Hi everyone

I just got an 11 week old kitten, and she and her litter box are in my bedroom. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on eliminating the odor in the room. It's getting pretty bad. I'm not so sure that I like the litter I bought. It's deoderized, and it seems to make the odor worse instead of better. I scoop her box 2 or 3 times a day, so it's not that. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Since she is so young, a non clumping litter would probably be best. Definitely unscented though!!! With my 6mo old kitten, I use scoop away in unscented and that controls odor pretty well. Most of the time, scents added to litter just ampliflies the litter smell. Maybe try Feline pine or Worlds best. Both are safe for kittens and I have heard that they control odor pretty well. Good luck on the litter quest.

I second worlds best or feline pine. personally I (and all 4 of my kitties) didn't like feline pine but it has good odour control. We live in an apartment with 4 cats and use Worlds Best and can rarely smell it unless they have just gone.

Don't be put off by the price of worlds best, as long as you scoop regularly, it lasts for ages - we actually find it cheaper than regular clay litter.

I have found that since we have been spending more on a healthier food that there is MUCH less smell in the poos...and also less poop!

I live in a smaller place and I find that when scooping no longer works it's time to change the litter completely. Do you have a litter box with a hood/dome? That may help. All in all, I have to change both litterboxes fully about once a week to keep the place from smelling like animals.

First, I really appreciate the advice. She's my first inside kitty, and I'm still learning what to do for her.

I've heard mixed things about the hood/dome litter boxes. Some say it's not good to have those because they trap odor in and may cause the cat to not want to use it anymore. I clean it regularly though, so I'm not sure that would be a problem in my situation. Any ideas?

I scoop the box several times a day, and change out the litter every Saturday. I've been using Fresh Step, but it has a deoderizer in it. That's probably where I went wrong. Where can you buy World's Best litter?

As for the more expensive food, does anyone have any suggestions? The people I got her from were feeding her Special Kitty dry kitten food, and she seems to like that. She definitely has a weakness for Fancy Feast can foods though. The smell of her poop seems to be much stronger after eating the can food.

Hi,

I just got a 7 week old kitten and I was really gonna go and get World's Best cat litter but I wound up having to pick something up at the supermarket (arm and hammer) which works pretty good because the kitty came home earlier than expected. I am planning on getting World's Best on my next purchase. It's available at Petco and Petsmart, though I found it to be a few dollars cheaper at my Petsmart here in Miami. I heard a lot of good things about it and I was told at both stores that they had a demonstration with World's Best where they put amonia in the litter to demonstrate how odors are instantly gone and you couldn't smell a thing! I will be finding out for myself very soon

I use Arm and Hammer and it is the best one I have found so far. I also have 7 cats so it gets dirty fast. There is this litterbox that I thought was really cool. It was at PetSmart. It was a Booda Dome but it had a ramp along the side of the box going into it. It was circular. It was HUGE and the litter part was completely enclosed so it can't be tracked outside the box (not easily anyways). It is probably majorly expensive, but how cool. It has filter vents on top. Maybe try one of those since the box is in your room.

I would use non clumping litter too on such a young kitten. Until about 6 or 7 months old at least I would think.

I use the covered boxes but not to keep oder in but to keep litter from getting sprayed all over the place. My cats get very energetic in the box and like to excavate for long periods of time. I also find that it keeps objects such as toys, my pens, combs and other things from finding their way into the litter box. My cats love to knock things off my desk and my two litter boxes flank my desk.

It is great at covering odours as long as your cat buries - obviously if its sitting on top it will smell with any litter, I love not having that ammonia smell though it makes me sick.

It takes a bit of getting used to the smell of the actual litter compared to the scented clay stuff most people are used to, it smells kind of farm'ish.

Personally mine would use a sofa or bathtub than a covered bos - I just couldn't get them used to it.

As for the food, most foods are better than special kitty. Wellness, Innova, Felidae etc are all great brands, but there are other cheaper brands out there that don't cost quite so much.
