I operate on windows 2000 at work and therefore use windows media player 9. It worked on friday, the last thing I played was some trans siberian orchestra early in the afternoon, but then I tried to use it before I left work and it just kept shutting down. No error message or anything, it would just close. So then yesterday I noticed that websites that have windows media embedded just shut down to, no error message. And usually it closes the rest of my browsers too. Does anyone have any idea what's going on>?

Sounds like something got crossed. You might want to uninstall the player and reinstall it. You can do this by going to control panel and click on add/remove software scroll down until you find the player then highlight the player and click remove. Once this is done you just go to windows update and reinstall the player(have windows check you system to get the right file) that should solve the problem.

yes it sure does go to start click on program scroll up to accessories then click on system tools when you see restore just click there follow instructions you should have a opition to use the calander to go two or three days.
or you can choose your own restore piont if i were you and your computer was working the day before you had the problem with media 9 i would go back only two days. If you want to read up on this you can go to the link i put in my other reply or just pm me if you would like to

there is no restore on my system tools here. I don't know that i'd want to do that anyway, does it change anything else? I just mean because I'm at work and I don't want to take my comp back two days and lose everything in between. I asked on a microsoft newsgroup but they don't seem to reply often..

No, your new files, etc., will be fine. I've used it a couple of times, and it usually does the trick.

Well in any case my OS doesn't offer system restore, and I've read up that it's not available on Windows 2000 professional. This windows media thing is driving me nuts though! I update my bf's band site a lot from work and I can't even get onto the site because I have 2 embedded windows media files on it ..

i decided just to disable it so I can still at least view websites but can't see the files.. and I don't really care if I can anyway because at work I can't sit here viewing and listening to stuff... at least it still works at home..

Could you download the Real Player and/or Quick Time Player in order to read the files? I have them in addition to the Windows Media Player, and usually use one of them instead. I downloaded them from sites offering a choice of how to view videos, and free downloads. If you do a search, you'll probably find where you can download them.

It sounds to me like you have a malware problem. Update Spybot and Adaware. Then reboot into safe mode and run both of them. Make sure Adaware is set to "scan within archives"
