Chelsea just hates being groomed. So much so that she tries to bite me.But her coat is so thick and fine she gets mats overnight sometimes. Especially when she spins around on the bathmat before she naps on it.

I have really good combs for her. And if a mat is ever bad enough that it won't come out without hurting her I cut it (very carefully)with a small pair of hair scissors.
I was wondering about products that migh make it so it's quicker, if not less often too. Something like the detanglers people use, but safe for kitty.

Even better would be something I could mix up myself. I hate ordering stuff like that online and I've seen nothing like that in any pet stores here.

My roomates took her to the vets office to get her shaved once. That poor vet tech needed twenty some odd stitches after that was done. No joke.

I've never had a cat with a coat quite this troublesome before. The fact that she loathes being groomed does not help. Up untill Chelsea I thought I was pretty good at this stuff, even nails. But she has me at a loss.

I have a detangling/dematting comb to use on Scully, he hates being groomed usually but doesn't seem to mind this one, it takes the matts out easily leaving no bald patch as it doesn't take the unmatted fur.

I also bathe mine about once a month and use a good conditioner and brush them while still damp - but I am not sure if that would be a good idea if Chelsea doesn't like baths and will bite or scratch badly.

The dematting saw is (strangely) available at petsmart, but my vet recommended it so i tried it and liked it.
Its the Groomax for cats softgrip dematter and looks like this:

I have also used the Matbreaker Dematting tool which is great and you can buy replacement baldes rather than a new tool, but they are not widely available and Scully seems to prefer the groomax

For Shampoo and Conditioner, I use Professional Pet Product's Salon Hypoallergenic shampoo and Apple White cream Rinse

They are available at www.petedge.com

Do you have a ZOOM GROOM?
My cats will lay and purr and roll around for as long as I will brush. It gets out a lot more hair than any other brush i`ve ever used.....and they LOVE it! (Usually, before i got this one, I had to wait til they were "in the mood" to be brushed....and then I`d better work quick, as they may not stay long.

Thanks guys!

I'm gonna get both these products. With her winter coat coming in, she will need them. Hopefully the zoom groom isn't something she will resent. No cold sharp bits and no pulling.

The special de mat combs look great! I've never seen those for cats before.

I was just about to ask the same question but decided to check and see if anyone else had a problem with mats. One cat will let me brush her for hours, the other will accept petting, but that's IT.

These products look great. THANK YOU

I should mention that the brush is basically a saw and cuts through the mats, so you might want to hold the fur at the base while cutting through if its a bad one... two of mine love the zoom groom the other two don't, i can't imagine it hurts, its basically like petting them, its just rubber. It helps with grooming but you will have to get the mats out first for it to be effective.

Yep I thought so. Her undercoat is so fine and thick that the mats start long befor I can feel them by stroking her. And they are usually very close to her skin. I have to be very careful no matter what I do to get rid of them. She is usually much happier a little while later. But she has to sulk for a few hours first. These tools should make the whole experiece much nicer for us both. I'm hoping that brushing her every day with the zoom will help prevent mats from forming. Regular combs dont seem to get enough undercoat to do that. The slicker doesn't seem to touch the undercoat. I think these will help though. They are on order as of tonight.
