Hello,
Can anyone help me on where I can obtain larger styrofoam boxes to use for winter feral shelters? Someone suggested contacting restaurants who get their meats shipped to them in these containers. The ones I have contacted all use cardboard. Perhaps a restaurant or other business chain I haven't contacted? Any advice?

Maybe check pharmacies or hospitals. I work at a doctor's office, and we get one medication shipped here that must stay cold, and it comes packed in a small styrofoam container. Maybe pharmacies or hospitals will have larger boxes.

Just a note, in case you haven't considered this: the type of styrofoam that is made of lots of little balls compressed together (each ball a millimeter or two in diameter) could be dangerous for cats. Those little balls sometimes become detached, and if they get into the nose or mouth of a cat, they can stick like glue and suffocate him! The same is true of the styrofoam pellets they fill beanbag chairs with -- children have actually died from inhaling a few of those.

Good luck!

As I mentioned in the other post, you might want to go to Petsmart and look into the "top paw dog homes". They are insulated and you can add a flap in front and line with straw or thermal blankets. They cost $39 or $49 each and are sturdy. Hope this helps.

It seems likely that stores like Home Depot would have large sheets of styrofoam that you could use to make boxes. I've seen thin sheets in stores like Sav-on and Rite-Aid to use in crafts and posters. Alley Cat Allies (I hope that's the right name!) has a lot of ideas for making winter shelters for cats. I hope some of this is helpful to you.

I live in Southern California were 50 degrees is considered cold and usually settle for plastic storage boxes with holes cut in them, or even cardboxes placed in areas that are sheltered from rain.
