stupid people..................... please for the love of all that is holy if you get a new pet, and you old pet doesn't like the new one after 2 days, don't have the old one put to sleep.

these morons came in today with thier 2 year old healthy cat to be euthinized, the reason?? "we got a puppy and the cat doesn't like the dog"...did they introduce the two properlly, no, were they willing to surrender custody so we can find the cat a new home, no. (very vocal about that one) everyone insisted to this non-caring couple that they should either give the cat time to adjust to the dog or sign over ownership and we will find a new home for the cat. they were insulted by the insistance. the two doctors working at the time and four staff members offered to take in the cat. they said no. and of course they wanted to be in the room with the cat when she was euthinized so we couldn't to the hugely illegal but morally right thing by finding a new home for her anyway. what an a**. i fear for the dog now. if they get another one and they don;t get along at the start will they kill the dog??

i hate people

the doctor wasn't allowed to refuse (either of them) neither of them are owners so they can't really make that call. right now the policy is to give the client options and go with what they want to do in all situations.

its annoying in these cases. but i think the receptionist make a loud enough stink about it in front of a full waiting room to make them think twice about doing that again

i think i prefer those who don't have any money and a sick pet. they approve to stuff untill they see the price then, with tears, say no. i think i prefer the caring broke to the jerks anytime

How sad.. These people are the type that think pets are disposal. I wonder what their reasoning was about not letting the poor cat get a new caring home.. That is the odd part. If they didn't want the cat then let it be rehomed..

I agree, people like THAT are stupid. Also lots of people are really careless and heartless when it comes to pets. This story just riles me.

Hearing about pets being given up for such DUMB REASONS (the owner is missing a heart, etc.) makes me want to pull every strand of my hair out.

Poor kitty...

I thought I was wierd to feel that way about people. I think most people are stupid. It's like they are still trying to evolve from cavemen or something.

There ought to be a law for situations like this. That is so sad.

The sad thing is..that happens EVERY DAY in shelters to cats that are adoptable but just didn't find a home in time. Hopefully when we get the numbers down...cats will be valued more and people won't make these types of decisions so easily.

I didn't read everyone's responses, but I have to say that we get people all the time bringing us a cat they've had for 5 years because they got a kitten or a puppy & the old cat won't get along. Here's an idea, since it's easier to rehome a kitten or puppy & the older cat has seniority, why not keep the older animal? Someone asked that of a couple who came in to return a cat they'd had 5 years & said "We've got too much money invested in the dog to get rid of it." As if an animal is an investment, no it's called a commitment, a family memeber, a beloved pet NOT AN INVESTMENT !!!!! (sorry to shout but they make me so mad)

There can be NO legitimate reason why they wanted the cat put to sleep. There is something profoundly wrong with those people.

I wish I had been there. I would have just grabbed the cat, run to my car, and floored it. By the time they tracked me down, the kitty would have been safely in the hands of a friend. If I lost my job, fine. Even if they called the police on me, fine -- I would do my time with pride.

in this area you could not find a vet who would put to sleep any healthy animal

they simply refuse to do it.

i think thats the way it should be. most of our shelters are no kill too

Poor cat =(

I got a puppy back in August.. but Orion didn't get along with it and was beating the poor thing up all the time.. I didn't go out and have him put to sleep.. I rehomed the puppy into a home with no cats.. at the time anyway.. they have since gotten a himalayan kitten.

I wish people like this would just.. die

We aren't going to end people acting this way...but if we can bring the numbers down..then it will make it more likely that a person will opt to allow their cat a chance at getting adopted. That is why Spaying, Neutering is the key.

When I first got my boxer, she'd never seen a cat before. She got very intent on them, wanted to chase them, harrass them, and ended up giving one of my cats stitches (she was not intentionally trying to hurt the cat, she just got over excited and grabbed as the cat was darting under a sofa). Did I get rid of the dog or the cats? Heck no! I trained the dog carefully, keeping her kenneled in the living room where she could see the cats but do nothing, or keeping her leashed to me so I could correct her behavior. It took months of this, but eventually she accepted the cats as part of the pack and now can be found snuggling and grooming them. She will still chase one now and again if they run in front of her, but as soon as they stop running she stops and comes back to me.

When I got my dog, I had four cats. I now have eight. And yes, every single time a new cat came into the house, I had to retrain my dog not to chase THAT cat. Each time took at least three weeks, but I did it.

Now, what would have happened if I went through all that and the dog just wouldn't learn and was seriously a danger of hurting or killing one of the cats, to where I knew it just wasn't going to work? Well, I certainly wouldn't have put the cats to sleep, that's for sure, nor the dog! I would have found a good home for the dog because the cats were there first.

I understand that sometimes things don't work out, but you give it every effort you can, not just TWO DAYS. GRR!!

Oh, and no, the dog is never left alone unsupervised with the cats. Neither is the other dog, who actually tried to nurse the cats when they were younger. My dogs are always under my direct supervision when interacting with the cats or anything else.
