I was looking at the Petsmart website about food and water dishes for cats. As I have explained earlier, Rascal developed the habit of spilling his water. I used to use a plastic water bowl, but he would grab it with his teeth or move it with his paw and spill it. Then I used a glass measuring cup because it was heavier. He still manages to spill it. I filled it up yesterday morning and when I got home from work, it was knocked over. So I went to the website and found these food and water bowls. Do any of you have them and are they effective?

your best bet is to go to a good feed store and buy a big ceramic bowl similiar to what you would feed rabbits in. It would be cheaper than these water cooler kind of things and Rascal would have to have a lot of strength to tip a ceramic bowl over.

Thanks Hissy, I will look into that! I was also thinking of putting a big rock, but then it wouldn't be too healthy.

Nena- I have the exact same one! I got it from petsmart too
I only use it for food though, so I'm not really sure how it is for water...but if it is anything like the food one...it works great! It keeps their food in and prevents it from spilling and they can help themselves.

What if you put his water bowl in the bathtub? that way if he spills it, it won't matter.

My cats love spending time in the bathtub staring down the drain for possible mice
and in the summer when my kitties drink a lot more, I fill up a rubbermaid dishwashing tub (12"x12"x6") with water and leave it in the bathtub. . .they love it and stand on the edge and bat water around. :tounge2: It is very heavy and would not tip over.

I wonder what your kitty is trying to do when he grabs the bowl in his teeth??

I have ones very similar to that. The littlest cat, Ophelia, likes the water one, but Trent likes the open bowl for water. But Trent eats out of the self-feeder, and Ophelia likes the open bowls for food. Go figure

We also have a real heavy weighted bowl for the water which works pretty well (they have lots of choices around here).

If you do get one, I would just recommend giving your kitty a little time to adjust to it by keeping both around for a while.

My friend uses the one for food. It works fine...she's got 5 cats and she says it's easier to feed them that way. I don't know about the water one though. Although, I think I should look into getting one because my cat knocks over her water every day, it's frustrating to say the least!!

What about one of those stainless steel no tip dishes that are used for dogs? It's pretty heavy and the sides are thick and rounded so he won't be able to grab it with his teeth and they have the rubber on the bottom so he can't slide it around.

Just a thought

I have something similar to what you posted a picture of. I found mine at Pet Value for 4$. Its just the dish part like the picture you have, its nice and wide so it sits nicely on the floor. However, the type I decided to buy doesn't come with the bottle, you actually use a one or two litre pop bottle with the normal narrow mouth, fill it up and twist it on. It works the same way and is very affordable. Neither of my cats have ever spilled or tipped it over.

I bought only the water bottle one at PetsMart about a year ago to use when I am gone for the weekend.Once it is filled with water it will be pretty hard to tip over.
Bella has never had a problem with tipping over bowls, but I think it will work great for your problem.
For everyday use she has a large heavy ceramic bowl for water and a smaller one for food (from PetCo).

they actually have those exact ones at wal-mart for less than petsmart. I almost bought that waterer b/c our cats spill their water too, but instead bought this pet water fountain (also at walmart-only $30)-no spills, they love the moving water, and it filters/cleans it too. Definitly worth the extra $ IMO. one of our kitties is almost 20 lbs and is quite strong, and he has yet to knock it over which he used to do ALL the time! We had a waterer similar to the le bistro one, and since it has a "tall" structure, he still managed to knock it over even when it was full

I am having similar problems with my, almost a year old, male cat. The only thing is, is that he is not turning the bowl over because it is attached to the wall (now). What he does now is splash it out with his paws until it is all gone. I also have another cat and she gets the short end of the stick, because he throws all the water out.
I want to get a bigger water tank/fountain, but fear he will just throw it all out and then there will be no water for them and a BIG MESS when I get home.
Any thoughts?
Thanks
Nik

i haven't used the lebistro bowls but i did buy 3 of these cat bowls because stimpy likes to push his bowls all over (he eats with his "hands"
). i also just have a really heavy ceramic bowl for water (same problem with stimps, lol) as well as our big cat fountain, which is thank goodness to heavy to tip.
