when is the best time to get your cat fixed? i have a female thats already had her first litter of kittens. now its like she stays in heat all the time i have heard that you need to wait until she is not in heat but does it matter if shes in heat or not to get her fixed?

It makes no difference. She can be fixed while she is in heat. I would do it ASAP before you have another litter!

The earliest you should get a cat fixed is around 5-6 months, after that... anytime is fine.

The best time to get your cat spayed is before she has a litter of kittens. Pick up the phone and call your vet today. It would not be good for your cat to become pregnant again.

Are you keeping the kittens or do you have good, permanent homes lined up for them?

She is safe to take to the vet now. The vet may charge you a little extra if she is truly in heat...but they can still conduct the spay.

To find a low cost clinic..you can go here:

http://www.lovethatcat.com/spayneuter.html

and select your state.

Please keep her indoors only until she is spayed.

This is actually not true and can be dangerous as some cats become sexually mature well before 5-6 months. I've seen kittens have kittens and it's not pretty...a pediatric spay/neuter is the way to go...and can be safely performed when the kitten weighs 2 pounds. It's perfectly safe and none of the clinic tests have showed any kind of developmental difference in kittens neutered at 2 lbs and kittens neutered at 4-6 months

Yes...cats can become pregnant before 6 months of age. There really isn't a medical reason to wait that long. Many vets now perform pediatric spay/neuter at the 2 lb. weight. The rescue I volunteer with spays/neuters as early as 8 weeks of age.
