I had 1 spayed yesterday and she will let me hold her, but she is really mad at me. I would be mad to if I woke up with stitches in my stomach too. She has looked for a place to get out of here. Okay she is calico and I have her given away if I can tame her. Now I have another one which is her sister. They are both just about 5 months old and I wanted to wait on them and catch the ones that keep having the babies. How do I catch them without trapping the little ones? I have pregnant ones out here and my vet doesn't want to spay them if they are very far along. I don't blame him. If you love animals it would hurt to see that. It is getting cold and this is a bad time for babies. These cats usually get the respiratory problems bad. I spent a fortune on antibiotics last year and sometimes skunks ate the antibiotics. Oh well, maybe the skunks got healthy. Anyway I caught 4 tiny kittens yesterday and let them go. What do I do after they are spayed? I don't want to put them back out until I know they are okay, but I am afraid I will make them sick bringing them in and then releasing them back in the cold. I closed the heater vent in my bathroom and put one in there. I have a spayed one, 2 rescues in another bedroom, and one to have spayed tomorrow, but my own cats are mad at me. What kind of stitches should my vet be using on my ferals? I can't have the stitches taken out. He is new at this. I mean working with ferals. Please pray for me. I am so tired, but I will make this work. My 2 year old just woke up screaming and she has a fever. Great. Okay I will need more help later. Please any advice? On trapping mama cats that is?

I live in the No. Va area near DC.
Darla, you sound terrific!
Keep the little ones you trap if they are old enough to be weaned and seems likely to tame down. I think 8-10 wks?? Tame them, and then they will be adoptable. OTW you will have to release once they have been fixed, and give back to the colony.

Indy Ferals in Indianna (sp?) has some good information on feral management, and they
may be able to help hook you up with groups in your area that will
assist you or be able to give you suggestions...

TNR1 on this website is a good resource too!

http://www.indyferal.org/ is the website address for Indy Ferals

Sending positive vibes your way!

Ask your vet to use dissolving stitches and glue. If he has questions regarding how to work with feral cats, I would suggest having him contact Alley Cat Allies:

I understand your vet does NOT want to spay a cat that is far along...but I will say that the Alley Cat Allies clinic will spay any and all cats that are pregnant because it is often difficult to retrap a mom cat and then you have to capture, spay/neuter and place all the kittens.

I have 2 spayed and caught 2 more to take today. I think 1 is pregnant so we will see what the vet says. Thanks for the advice. I got 1 bigger cat, but the others try to dig food out of the trap so they don't have to go in it. It is hard when you have so many and little ones too. The older ones are seeing the others get trapped, so I am afraid of not catching them and now I am losing their trust. They look at me like I am evil. I don't like it but I know it has to be done.

Darla...I know that Alley Cat Allies has some advice for trap savvy cats...you may want to read a few of the articles:

http://www.alleycat.org/resources_care.html

BTW..it's fantastic that you have caught so many!! BTW..if the vet feels uncomfortable about spaying the pregnant cat but you don't have anyplace for her...I would see about contacting a TNR group to see if they have anyone who could foster her or know a vet that would perform a spay.

There's no place like home
Darla - great work you are doing! If some of the cats in the colony get trap wary, tie the trap door open with some plastic twist tabs for a few days or a week or so and continue feeding them in there. It can lull them into a false sense of security - they see cats going in and out of them for a while and they may forget what they have seen previously. It works for me.
