My momma cat April is in heat again and I have a while still until her spay apointment. Her kittens are now 12 weeks old and ther are 4 males. Are they too young to try and breed with her? I'm hoping so.

It is an individual thing among males, but to be safe, I would ask your vet when s/he feels comfortable with neutering. Some want to wait until 6 months of age, but others will do it as soon as a certain weight is achieved and the testicles have descended. Call around in your area. Also, there is a lovely list of Low- or No-Cost Spay/Neuter clinics listed by state at www.lovethatcat.com/spayneuter.html . There may be a clinic nearby you which can provide early neuter at a lower cost.

Best of luck,

I intended to wait til 6 mo....but Toby started "getting the idea" between 4-5 months and my vet said that in that case he was ready to be fixed. We had it done and he had no prob at all with it.

I know a Siamese breeder who had a 5 month old kitten running with her queens - thinking it was ok......he became a father at 7 months!

Well I'm going to adopt a 3 month kitten soon GOD willingly, I just called my Vet and he said he'd prefer to keep it until it's 6/7 months old. But again, it depends on the Vet but I keep hearin' the 6-7 month timeline alot so i'm assumin' its the best.

You can have it done between 8-12 weeks (the best time in my opinion because there is very little chance of unwanted male behaviors to develop) or 2 lbs.

Unfortunately that was an old 'standard' and as one of the posters pointed out...a cat can become fetire before that time....so best to have the neutering done as early as possible.

At 12 weeks you can pretty safely expect that the kittens are not fertile yet. However, if you can find a vet willing to do the procedure, this is the ideal time to spay and neuter them.
