hi all, i have 5 kittens all of whom are littertrained. However recently one of them has started weeing outside of the tray - I thought at first it was because the litter tray was too dirty (it was just before I did the change), but I caught him doing it another time just after I had changed the tray.

Its doubly annoying because he does it just right outside the litter tray, on the mat that the tray is on! Is it because he sees the mat as part of the tray? he does do a little scraping motion with his paws after hes done...

So does this indicate any health problems? what needs to be done?

First, I would have him checked for a urinary tract infection...if he checks out and is healthy...then I would add a second littertray where he is weeing. Perhaps 1 isn't enough now.

With very young kittens, they will often do this as part of the litter-training process. Place the litter tray on newspaper so the urine is absorbed and you can then just throw away the paper. Be sure to clean the area under the litter tray thoroughly once a day as kittens will repeatedly go if they can smell the scent of urine.

Be patient with him, he'll get the right idea soon.

It could also be that he's picky about his litter box being very clean, A lot of cats are uh... anal about that, try cleaning it more often (not saying that it's super dirty or anything) maybe even a couple times a day....

hi - we took them to the vets for their first vaccinations
and the vet said it was nothing to worry about, his bladder felt (??) fine apparently - i did get some pH paper from work though and have decided to test his urine myself if he does it again...
i know i'm probably being weird about it...

thanks Melsa, we were cleaning the litter out once in the morning and once in the night already! (though now we have completely on nutro choice kitten the litter smells so much cleaner..)

I would make a run to the grocery store and buy those aluminum throwaway trays, the kind you can put a turkey or a roast in? They come in clumps and you get four for just a few dollars- Bring them home and put plain cat litter in them and set them around the other pan, not to close, but not all that far away. it could be he just needs his own spot to pee in, and not one peed in by his brothers- my guess is, he is an alpha kitty. That is what I would do-
