Abbie,

Almost twenty years ago, right out of college I moved to the city. I had little money, even less possessions, and not one clue. But I knew one thing, I wanted a kitty. I wanted you, even though we hadn't met yet. I saved up for a few paychecks, and as soon as I could, I went to the Anti-Cruelty Society. There you were, just a little thing. You were the first and only kitten I asked to "meet". Immediately you crawled up on my neck, stuck your muzzle in my ear, started to purr, and fell asleep. I was charmed. I was in love.

We grew up together, and you were with me through all the ups and downs of young adulthood. The only thing is, while I was growing up, somehow you grew old. The decline has been slow, but it has been steady. I wondered how I'd know when it was "time". On October 10th, it was definitely "time". The sad details of your last day and half are irrelevant...they're not "you". But your personality never waned...my cranky old girl...you hissed at your vet (as usual), even at the end. He always understood you, so he just chuckled, kissed your head, and choked up a bit with tears himself. You and I started out together, and we were together at the end.

Now your bowls stand empty. I say to myself that I leave them out for Beau, my ex-feral boy who idolized you, even though you never gave him an inch. But the truth is that I'm not yet ready to put those bowls away. When I finally do, it will mean that you are really gone.

Maybe I'll leave them out just a little longer.

Kelly, I'm so incredibly sorry you lost your lifelong friend. I wish there were words to take away the agonizing pain and emptiness in your shattered heart. Precious Abbie loves you so much and now is playing joyfully in Heaven! I know for sure the two of you will one day be reunited. For now, she lives on in your heart, right there with you, always. A candle burns in my home tonight in honor of your beloved baby. You are in my prayers, Kelly. May God give you strength and peace during this painful time.

My heart goes out to you, and I know exactly what you have been going through, as I lost my 20 year boy Snoopy on the last day of February, this year.

Abbie was a beautiful girl, and your tribute to her was so touching and beautiful. Keep her bowls out as long as you need to.

I am so sorry you have lost your kitty Abbie! To love someone your whole adult life, then to lose them is so painful. Hugs to you and all the kitties and fosters at your home. I'm sure they are missing her, too!

Rest in peace, Abbie. You were lucky to have such a relationship. Now you are forever young, forever healthy, over the bridge. You will be reunited one day.

I'm so sorry for your loss. It brought tears to my eye's because what you said about not noticing her growing old as you grew up captured exactly what happend with my Smokey. Thankyou for sharing that with us.

Isn't that the way of it? They are always there, and we expect them to always be there. Having pets in your life is a bittersweet experience.

I am so sorry for the loss of your lifetime soulmate cat. I know you have a lot of pain in your heart. Having experienced what you are going through now, I can tell you cry a lot. It helps. You have a lifetime of wonderful memories. I hope they will bring you peace and comfort. Little Abbie, you were a blessed cat. Now that you are at the Rainbow Bridge, go find a big black and white tuxedo cat named Max. He is a sweetie and he will be a wonderful friend for you now. Rest in Peace.
