You can either leave food out all the time or you can feed meals at different times.

Personally, I feed my cats two meals a day, one when I get up in the morning and one in the evening. My cats are little pigs and would eat too much if I let the food out all the time.

Do whatever works best for you.

It might also be a good idea to combine dry food with canned food. But canned food shouldn't be left out all day or it will go bad.

Good luck with your new kitty. (don't forget to post pictures!)

IM not going to free feed my cat because i dont want him to become fat.
I cant do canned foods.. because everyone in my family goes to school or works. Unless. I give him canned food with dry food for his dinner? Is that a good idea? Dry in the morning and Dry and Canned for dinner?

both my boys get dry food in the morning & night.

this hasnt always been the case... I used to give them dry in the morning and then wet at night - its fine to do it either way.

How old is the kitten? do you know?

I agree with you about free feeding - I dont do it either. My Cedar would never leave the food bowl

I dont know if im getting the kitten from my friends mom. Since were getting a cat from PETCO. Dont worry.. Because its an adoption rescue in Petco. Petco sponsers them. Valley Stream Cat Rescue dosent have a shelter. SO they use petco. IM not sure on the age but im going to ask today.

Okay. Ill do Dry in the morning and maybe wet in the night. Im not sure.

I went off the wet at night because my Tipsy decided he didnt want to eat it anymore... sometimes they will be a little picky. Try the dry/dry or dry/wet combination and see what works for the kitty and go from there.

great you have come here and asking all these questions - whichever kitty you get is going to be very lucky to come home with you!!

Sounds like a good plan.
I tried that too but one of my cats didn't like wet food at all (weirdo!
)

Give it a try and you'll see what works best for you and your cat.

I think canned food is preferable to dry, because of the moisture content, and also because there's far less grain than in most dry foods, but I have a dry food fanatic. I give him dry food in the morning, and canned in the evening. A lot will depend on the age of the cat you get, and its preferences. Kittens should be fed three or four small meals a day, while adult cats generally get two meals. Some cats refuse to eat dry food, while others stick their noses up at canned.

My babies won't eat canned food even as a special treat they hate it. they will walk over to it and sniff it then turn around with their back to the bowl and start complaining. I had a bunch of canned food left over because that is what my sweet little Hobo ate
. So I give the canned food to the old neighborhood cat and the babies get dried food.

You're generally better off avoiding the supermarket brands, and going with a better quality one from a pet store. The better brands are much more expensive at first glance, but because the recommended feeding quantities are smaller, they really aren't. You want to find a brand with mainly meat, and little grain or by-products. This thread might give you some ideas: http://www.thecatsite.com/forums/sho...6&page=1&pp=12

I think that if you're getting a kitten, you should free feed dry and offer canned twice a day. Those little buggers need all the calories and energy they can get!

Also, I would suggest that a kitten should get food specifically for kittens. They have a lot of growing to do and the kitten food is richer.

oh I am so sorry. Did they give you a reason?
Maybe you can explain to them how much research you have been doing so they know that you will be a good owner to this new cat/kitten

edited to ask - when you say you had to give up your gerbils - what do you mean? where did they go?

You can leave canned food out for about an hour. I have to go to work in the morning and during the 2 hours while I'm getting ready I have time to put down some wet food. I feed it twice a day, morning and evening and I leave out some dry food, but if you choose to only feed wet in the evening, that's fine. If they won't eat it all then try just feeding a quarter of a can at each wet meal and then refrigerate and warm canned leftovers to room temperature before serving. Or buy the small 3 ounce cans and feed half at each meal. It really is much healthier for cats to have at least some wet food in their diet. If your cat refuses to eat canned food that's one thing but I don't think it's right to deprive cats of wet food if they enjoy it. There are many cat owners who refuse to feed wet food just because they don't want to deal with the smell and the mess but what they don't know is that there are a lot of nutritional benefits to feeding wet. This article supports wet food only but I think it's fine to feed a combination of both dry and wet. This article logically explains why wet food is so good for cats.
