Does anyone else's kitty lick their nose and/or lips while they are sleeping??

Our little kitty Kuri (he's six months old) sometimes sleeps with me, and in the middle of the night or early in the early, he likes to stick his face right in mine and either lick my nose/mouth or try to smell my nose by sticking his nose up mine!!

I think this is so funny (and gross)! I'm not sure why my face smells so good to him, but every time he does this, I wake up and I have to wipe my face on my sleeve.

Serenity stills enjoys sucking on my lips, earlobes, and fingers as a comfort measure to go to sleep. Sierra likes to lick my face all over, usually at some odd hour of the night! Isn't that just the most precious wake up call!

It could be a moisturizer or lip balm you wear to bed.

I also think it's a way to subtlely wake us up and get attention. I once woke up to my kitty licking my arm. When I opened my eyes she stopped and gave me this guilty look like "uh oh you caught me!"

That's so cute!!!

I don't wear any lip balm or moisturizer to sleep. I only use night cream sometimes, but only around my eyes, just because I know Kuri will end up licking the lower half of my face and I'm afraid of him licking that stuff.

I wonder, do cats like licking us because they think they are grooming us? Or because our skin is salty? Hmm. I'm out of ideas! hahaha!

Oh my goodness, yes! Well, sorta: my Clyde wakes me with passionate kneading (makin' biscuits, we call it), then comes nuzzling and purring around my face with the same sweet little nosekisses that melted my heart when he was a baby. So far, it's lovely.

But then he begins kissing me right on the mouth, and if I try to discourage this with an arm across my face, he just insinuates his head underneath and smooches me some more! He is relentless, and try as I may to go back to sleep, he persists until I finally drag myself out of bed.

At this point, I inquire as to Clyde's purpose in waking me, and he will sometimes lead me out to the kitchen, sit down next to the bowl, and give me a meaningful gaze.

But -- and here's the problem -- most of the time, he doesn't lead me anywhere! Most often, once I'm out of bed, Clydie just sprawls on the windowsill and begins to lick his paws. So my question is, WHYYYYYY???

Why does he do this? What does he want? And oh please, please, can you help me figure out how to persuade him to let me sleeeeep???

By the way, it's not just when I'm sleeping -- he sometimes does this when I'm at the computer or watching TV, too. He acts for all the world as if there's some kind of major emergency he needs to call my attention to... and then when I get up and say, "Okay, show me what you need, darlin," he just wanders aimlessly away. AUGH! Any ideas?

Aww, he sounds like he wants 100% of your attention focused on him!! And if you are sleeping, he will wake you up until you realize that you should be paying attention to him!
Those are our babies for you!

My Clinton gives me midnight and morning make-outs too. Even though it's probably kinda unsanitary, I absolutely
it. It makes me feel like he's giving me human affection, since I spoil him with kitty affection during the day. He usually gives me the kissies when he wakes up at about 2am to go play, and again at 6:30 when he wakes me up promply ten minutes before whenever my alarm is set for!!
He is the best part of waking up, sorry Folgers!

Our Toby will "hook" my lips when i`m asleep....and draws blood! (Only time he ever puts his claws out on purpose) I think probably he is either trying to wake me up (which it does!) or I`m snoring and my lips are flapping and he is trying to "catch" them. Either way, that is one of the reasons he does NOT sleep with me. (The other being his terribly loud and awful yowls in my ear in the middle of the night. (THAT brings me right up out of a sound sleep, let me tell you!)

My top cat, Eddie loves to lick my nose and my closed eyelids! It tickles, but it's nice to feel I'm loved ; - ))

I wonder WHY he does that???

Oz chews on his father's goatee. It's ... entertaining ... to say the least.

My cat Tygrys, he's about 16 months old and sometimes he'll be doing that to me when he wants something, he'll be sitting on the pillow beside my head and he starts to poke my cheek or my eyelids with his wet nose or he starts to smack me around with his paw trying to wake me up, sometimes he'll just lick my eyelids. He picks the most convinient times too like 3 am.

When I do wake up I know that someone closed the basement door and he can't get to the litter box, or to his food when he's hungry. once i open the door and he goes down to do his business or to eat then he comes back and goes right back to sleep and he will sleep untill about 6/7 am that's the time i get up for work so he just gets up with me.

Have two of those over here...Bob is my 7-month old palm sucker. Every night, Bob climbs into bed with me and nurses on my right palm...not left...only my right hand (hand used to bottle-feed about agizzilion hours w/Bob).

Elsie...the baby of the bunch...only 9-weeks has just started licking my nose in the wee wee hours of morning. When I wake-up and look at her, she stops & just stares. Go figure? Very cute but can get very annoying

Charlie is BIG on the 2am lickies. If something wakes him up in the middle of the night (like the neighbours) he starts to purr and lick. He's not that particular about where he licks (your face, neck, arm, back...) but he is insistent!! If you roll over to get away from him he simply lies across your head
. Let me tell you, that's real comfy at 3 in the morning. Oh well, it could be worse... when my fiancee ignores him Charlie stands on his adams apple
. OUCH!

He also has to be picked up so he can lick the end of our noses when we get home from work. It's kind of like getting "hello" kisses!! I think it's adorable
. But I must admit it's a little gross when he tries to lick the inside of my nose... YUCK!!

Snickers is a licker.

It starts around 5am or so; my alarm is set to go off at 6am (weekdays ONLY). No matter for Snickers! He gets up from his spot on the bed, snuggles next to my face, and starts gently nibbling my nose. It is done in a really loving, sweet way... just to let me know that hey momma, I'm hungry!

He ONLY does this at this time of the day tho. He'll snuggle me on the sofa too like if I sit down fer a few in the evenings, get real close, but never do the nibble/nose licking thing.

Rowan will nuzzle me, generally when his nose is very wet and cold. Bella likes to lick me, though. She never purrs louder than when she's sitting on my lap and has my hand held captive. She's big on licking the top of my feet right after I step out of the shower, too. She tries to lick my face, especially in the morning when she thinks I should be waking up, but I generally try to hide my face in the pillow or blankets to avoid that.

Since reading your assessment of my Clydie's behavior, I've observed him very carefully... and by golly, I think you're absolutely right. Instead of hopping up to feed him when he gets affectionate, I've been staying put and snuggling him silly... and he loves it. I've realized there are only two places he tries to lead me to: the kitchen for breakfast in the morning, and the bedroom several times a day, when he wants to share his nap with me. *awwww*

And here I was looking for some sort of cryptic Message! All along, the message was just
.

Yay! That's great, you found the solution for both of you! Now he is being "understood" and you don't have to get out of bed every time he wakes you up!
Now I just wish I understood MY kitties a little better, ha ha!

This thread was so cute to read!
Marlee has just recently started with this. I've had her around a month and a half and she had never been a licker (I was a little dissappointed b/c my BF's kitty Mick is a huge licker, and its just so cute!). Then maybe a few days/a week ago, about 10 minutes before my alarm went of I feel little baby licks (I mean so soft! could barely feel them) on my lips, chin, and nose. It was the cutes thing, it was like she just did it soft enough to wake me up, and once she saw my eyes open she would do it just a little harder til I started petting her or moved my face. I guess its my new wake up call! She used to just nose around me with her whiskers. Its fine on the weekdays as long as she waits til close to alarm time, but it might not be so great on the weekends! Awww, and this morning, I woke up laying on my back with my left arm up above my head, and Marlee was laying stretched out on her back beside me, with her little head turned to wear it was laying up against me, it was so sweet I didn't want to move!
