I was not gonna say anything about this as I know someone reads what I say, but you will like this.

On Tuesday, I get to be a dad for 36 hours or just short of - why, well, even tho my ex and I divorced, we get on very well indeed and shes been and continues to be great to me. Anyhow, a couple of months ago, I asked if i could take my sunbeam (son) away over night by myself for my first time (huge step for me) and give him a brilliant time on the west coast of the UK (home of the illuminations)... and so i booked a great hotel, sea view, the best I can and have saved hard for this to give him loads of treats etc.
I know you are gonna sit and read and laugh, but to me, i have wanted this for a long time and its a huge step mentally and I am now counting the hours till Tuesday, not weeks. Just pure quality time with him and I am just going crazy waiting for Tuesday. Think I packed an overnight bag three weeks ago. My ex is welcome to call him at any time - will be giving all details of where staying etc, and shes been incredible about it - like I say, we get on brilliantly and I intend to keep it that way. My son and I grow nearer and the bond strengthens with him weekly - see him every sunday, chat as well twice a week.
So, See him Sunday, then monday hes with mum and then 0800 Tuesday, in the car, point west, car has been serviced and I give him every inch of me.
Just a father and his son and you know something, I am so grateful to his mum for so much and also for bringing him and i so much closer together.

well had to share this lot -

Aw, sounds like you will be having a good time! Great that you are keeping your relationship with your son strong, and that you and his Mom are able to put his needs first. Enjoy your overnight vacation!

I think it is onderful when single parents can get along well enough to let each other be the parents that the child needs them to be.
I hope you and your son have a truly wonderful time!!!
Be sure you tell us all about it when you get back!

I am happy for you, Kev, but I don't understand why you haven't been able to split time with him all along?

Anyone that could read that and laugh is completely heartless! I am thrilled to hear that you are going on this trip. I hope you have a wonderful time. Please take lots of pics! We would love to see how big Christopher has gotten.

Awww, I would never laugh at that. I recently started saving up to take the family to disneyworld/land... But it's going to take a couple years to get enough money to go and have a good time with mini-splurges, etc. Teddi won't be big enough to go till then anyway
I'm glad your dream is coming true soon though..

Debs - I do see him a lot - not enough as hes 40 miles away- but I see him every weekend without fail - have never missed one. Sometimes, have managed to get off work an hour or few early and asked if ok to collect him from school and take him for dinner. Never once have I been refused and my relationship with my son gets stronger and stronger and stronger. You would not get a hair between us. This couple of days is the first on my own. Not cause I have not wanted him over night, just that was unsure if could cope. However, I know I can cope, this is a small step for me, and one i am grateful to someone for - just cant wait to go... just hope his ear infection clears! Bless him.
Am gonna be the best dad and dont wanna miss a thing of his life.

Enjoy your trip, Kev. It sounds very "special", and I'm sure it'll be something your son will remember fondly years from now.

Kev,

You'll be a fine dad because you already are. I hope he starts to spend weekends with you on a regular basis.

Kev,
I hope your trip with your son is perfect. It is a wonderful thing that you and his mother can put him first. A boy needs a strong relationship with his father. You will never be sorry for all the time you can give him. Prayers go with you.
