Hello,

I was wondering if anyone has used or uses an oral tablet form of flea control and did it make your cat sick? If not, does anyone have any info on such a product.

I haven't bought any, yet.

Thank you

The only product I am familiar with is called Capstar. It is very safe. However, it only kills the adult fleas that are on your cat's body right now. It does not kill eggs or larvae and it does not prevent new fleas from jumping on him. Topical products (Advantage, Revolution, and Frontline - NO others) are much better since they kill all life stages of fleas and prevent re-infestation for up to a month.

There's also an oral flea control product called Program that's been on the market for several years now. It's available from veterinarians, and is very safe. It doesn't kill the adult fleas, but prevents them from reproducing so they'll die off over time (or with the assistance of household flea control products).

Program is most useful for indoor cats, because cats who have regular access outdoors will continue to bring in new fleas - although if they bite the cat on Program, those fleas will not produce more in your home.

I've never tried Capstar on our cats, but I've given them Program before without any problems - the vet said it's safe even for the senior cats.

I am waiting on my first shipment of Program to get my indoor cats started on. We are going to use that along with the advantage.

I'll let everyone know how it goes in a month or so.

I had all my animals on frontline for years. Then this summer we had a major flea infestation and NOTHING I did made them die. I was furious that I'd spent so much money on a product that didnt' work! So I decided to try advantage. I've seen a MAJOR decrease in fleas. The last brushing/bath I saw ONE flea on him. So now with the program I am hoping to kill ANY fleas that might come around.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I did break down and buy Advantage, however, I still considering an oral product as my cats do not like having that stuff on them.

We put the Revolution from the vet on both kitties and just separate them overnight so they can't lick it off each other and by morning it has dried and the kitties don't have a problem with it.

This is just what my vet says, I know many will differ in opinion. I asked him about Revolution b/c of the fact that is supposed to get rid of fleas and prevent Heartworm. My vet says he prefers to use Advantage and another form of heartworm medicine (Interceptor) b/c he doesn't feel Revolution is the best for flea prevention. But like I said, its personal preference for everyone, and some things may work better for certian cats. Good luck finding what works best for you!
