So I adopted Tola on Sunday night. Since then she has been meowing this horrible gutteral distressed meow. I figured it was just because she was stressed out. But even yesterday she was perfectly happy, purring and then let out the same kind of meow. I wonder, is this her meow? Could it be? Last nite was the first night she actually didn't meow horribly and let me sleep. She even hopped on the bed with me a few times. She made a better meow, but it was still wierd....

do some cats just have wierd gutteral scary meows as their normal meows? I'm confused.....it's distressing and stressful for me to listen to.....

PS - nothing is wrong with her health wise.

Yeah, it could be her meow. Our Sunny has quite the normal meow, while Hobbes has more of a beep as a meow. I've had cats with longer, more gutteral meows. Do you, perhaps, have a Siamese mix on your hands? It sounds like what their meows tend to sound like. Do you have a picture of your new little one?

How old is she? (Excuse the questions if you've answered them before...I tend to be forgetful, and am HORRIBLE at remembering names.) Could it be that she's in heat? Sunny made such sounds while in heat.

My fixed male, Toby , has an awful yowl too....thankfully he does`nt use it much and makes more humming and little quirky sounds when he`s "talking" to us or to his buddy Tedy.

I'd guess if there wasn't any sort of heat goin' on, it's just the cat being itself.

76 used to make no meows, or just the silent sort, and his purr sounded like a rusty chainsaw-lawnmoer hybrid demon thing, not the usual sweet "mrrrrrr".

Just think of it this way: at least your cat doesn't sing you Barry White songs at night, with a meow like that.

She's a tuxedo kitty named Tola, and I just put up her pics in "fur pictures only". She is just one year's old, and she's definately not in heat as she got spayed about 5 weeks ago. Maybe it's the after effects of spaying?

Sounds like you have an unusual meow on your hands.
It might change as she gets older...

I don't think you would have any after-effects this long afterward, so don't worry about that.

Seems like every cat I've seen has had a different meow. One cat I saw in the vet's waiting room sounded like a parrot squawking.

One of my cats has a normal meow and the other one meows silently. But when I put them in the car, they have that same gutteral yowling. Maybe your kitty is just a little stressed right now and it will get better as she gets used to everything.

One of my cat's has a normal meow, or at least close to normal, and Trinity will meow normal most of the time, but is it normal for her to chirp? Sometimes she sounds just like a little bird when I hold her and she purrs, then she stop's purring and starts chirping. Or, she also chirps when she looks outside our big glss door and watch's the birds. idk, all my cat's are wierd, lol, but I love them anyway.

Oh poor Tola! It might just be that she hasn't got a very pretty voice - although I'm sure in time you'll come to love her little squwak like any other!!

Burmese often have funny-sounding meows. I remember my friend's boy, Gandalf, always sounded like he was being strangled...lol

Well, yesterday she made normal meows!!! I guess she was just stressed out poor thing. She did a few of those awful meows too, but they are getting less and less. I am also beginning to feed her 50 g more of food, because I just felt like she was acting as if she was starving. It really seems to have made a difference. She is much calmer now. she also slept with me most of the night! yay!!!

Currently she is playing with own shadow.....*shakes head* silly cat.
