How often do you replace litterboxes?

How often do you all replace your litterboxes? I recently bought a new Booda Dome and the girls are going potty way more than they were before!
They love it!

I know that litterboxes can absorb odors that us humans cannot smell but that cats HATE. Is it a good idea to completely replace litterboxes every so often? If so, how often?

Good question....I don`t know...but I`d like to know, so will be looking back to see if you get some responses from anyone who knowsmore than we do on the subject.
(Wonder why they would get tired of the smell....I mean, it`s THEIR SMELL!)

I'm curious to know this too. I'm looking for an excuse to get another Booda Dome.

We are talking about the smell from the litterbox, yes? Do you like *your* smell of what you do in the bathroom? Speaking for myself, even though the smell and what resulted in the smell came from me, I don't happen to like any of it.

That's a good question. I swear I've seen Hissy post something about this topic quite awhile ago but I cannot seem to find that post. I'm curious to know the answer too. I would think it would obviously need to be changed if 1) it has a hole in it, 2) lots of deep or even minor scratches on the inside of the box....traps bacteria etc., or 3) it really stinks!!

My supervisor at the shelter tells me once a year. Especially if it's plastic, since plastic is obviously going to get scratched up and bacteria hang out in the little crevices. If too much accumulates...it means more trips to the vet!

I only have one big corner litter box for my two kitties, and I scoop twice a day, at least. They seem to be just fine sharing one. I used to have the Booda Dome and I actually would throw it out every six months or so and just replace it with a brand new one. Easier than cleaning it!

That's kinda my philosophy too
. Every 6 months seems good with multiple cats b/c by then there probably little scratches in the plastic that we just can't see!

Man this is a good question! Glad you raised it Amy!

I have 6 litter boxes, they vary in age because.... so do my cats.

I do agree that after a while, the boxes need to be pitched; scratch-marks are kinda hard to clean, even if you power-wash them outside on the lawn (I do!) and use good cleaning liquids for it.

Plus sort of like how human toilets "wear out" after a while, litter boxes do, too. I guess.

There's no place like home
I have spare boxes and rotate them into the mix. The used ones are bleached, put outside in the sun to bake off the bleach, then used to replace a dirty one.

When I used regular litter, I would have to do a complete rotation about once a month, as the plastic was absorbing the smell. Since I started using Littermate, the boxes rarely smell but I still rotate them out every 2 months or so.

Once the boxes get really scratched, they are tossed and replaced - probably once a year.
