This is such a difficult one.
I think there are so many factors. Help is available for people with psychiatric diseases, but many people who have an uncontrolled/undiagnosed psychiatric illness are physically and mentally unable to seek out this help. They do not have the presence of mind to rationally or logically organise to get help, or find help. It is available but not necessarily easily available.
Also, the help that is available is often so underfunded, understaffed and underoperated that many people who do seek help are told they'll be ok, or put on meds, or looked at once or twice, and then told to go away and carry on with their lives. A person who is in the middle of a pschotic break will just not have the capacity to rationally reason out that they need help.
I have Bipolar Disorder, and believe me, it took years for me to get the proper treatment, and that was with help from family, friends, referring doctors, hospitals etc. And I was a lucky one. After three years of weekly psychiatric treatment, meds and counselling, I tried to kill myself four times in two months.
The point is that these kinds of illnesses affect your mind, your behaviour, your reason and your rationale. We do not expect insane people to behave like sane people, and yet we expect them to rationally, calmly go and seek out help when they are just not capable of doing so.
Not only that, but often the help is available after a lengthy waiting period. I rang a hospital once, terrified that I was going to kill myself and not be able to control my impulses, and was told to call my GP on Monday!!!!!!!!!
There are many uneducated, underpriviledged people who just do not have the resources or know-how to handle this kind of thing.
We mustn't pass judgement - not on the mother, not on the family, not on the witness, not anyone. We are basing our arguments on a few paragraphs of an article we have read, nobody knew this woman, her family or her situation.
It is a tragedy for those poor innocent children, most of all, and I think that blame and finger-pointing will serve no purpose here. I just hope that it serves to make people more aware of some desperate, unhappy, tragic, terrible lives out there, so that next time we may be able to act in time to prevent such a terrible thing happening again.
