My hubby and I have been debating on whether to build an outdoor enclosure for our cats...but i`m still afraid that other cats and wild animals might come up to the fencing and "give them something" ...and am also concerned about fleas and ticks.
So...we`ve decided...next spring we are going to build a back porch with lots of windows, storms and screens. The bottoms of the windows will be up off the floor at least 18 inches -2 feet and will have wide window ledges for Toby and Tedy to lay and walk on. It will be to the north side of the house where it will be shady and they can look out over the gardens in the back yard and watch the birds that come to nest in the trees, bathe in the birdbath and feed from the feeders....and best of all....WE can enjoy it with them! :-)
We`d like to add a small doggie door so that they can come and go as they please during the day....but I`d like to be able to shut it off at night. Does anyone know if they make doors like this and where I`d find one?

I cannot help you with the door, Linda, but I think it sounds like heaven!
Does Tedy and Toby want to share their space with me ?

They have this I saw on Home shopping network one day:

You put it in a window and they can go in and out as they please but you can lock the door at night so they can't get out. They things that looked like cardboard are actually flaps the cats can go through. It's so it keeps cold or hot air from entering your house but the cats can come and go. They demostrated it on TV and I thought it was cool. Looks fun for me!

By the way, it sounds like a fantastic project. You and the cats will love it. My screened-in porch is probably the main reason I renewed my lease! When I move, I will have to find a condo/ apartment/ home which has this feature because the cats and I enjoy it too much!

Sounds like a GREAT idea! Our cats love their outdoor enclosure, although it's not as nice as what you're planning.
Hope you'll do a progress thread when you get going on it. I'm sure lots of us will be interested in seeing how it's done.

I will be sure to do that....but it`s getting cold here in Mich...so it will be a project for nest spring. (Hopefully I will learn to post pics by then!) :-)
