I only ask because, sooooooo many Australians don't know ours!!!

And I have to confess, the only reason I know it is because it was pinned up on the back of my neighbour's toilet door and I used to read it when I was a kid

I know for Americans it is drummed into you from early childhood, along with the Pledge of Allegiance (or is that just in movies??? Lol...)

But we are notorious in this country for fluffing such patriotic things as one's national anthem...lol

The first two verses. It's taught in schools. Interesting though, the original words are in Swedish, the language of high brow culture in Finland during the 19th century, when such things as "nations" were promoted. In Swedish I only know the beginning, but then again, I'm not really a fan of national anything by anyone in the world.

I know ours for Canada. We sung it in school.
I'm curious what the Australian one is now.

I know the Canadian one - in both official languages. I learned it initially in French which version I prefer (it's less sexist!) but I do understand both editions. (It is not a literal transdlation and the ideas in both are somehwat different - the land of 2 solitudes, sigh!) Tho kind of like the red and the blue states, maybe.

I know the first two verses, but after that, i'm completely lost!

I remember being in Church once and we were singing it and I was so confused when it carried on after the first two verses....I thought that was it!

Ours is so awful though, it's more like a funeral dirge! If it were more up tempo then I might make the effort to learn it, even more so if it didn't refer to old Lizzie! (Is that treason? Can I expect to be arrested anytime soon?!)

You are right. Americans are taught the National Anthem at a very early age. We are also taught to stand when we hear it being played or sung. I always feel very emotional and sometimes get teary eyed. I am proud to be an American. I am sure those in other countries feel the same.

I know mine...and also the Liberian one, (w. Africa) as we lived there for 2 years....and although I`m loyal to my country, as little part of my heart will always belong to Liberia.

There's more than 1 verse?
Just kidding - I know there's more than 1 verse, although I have no idea of the text of verse 2

I know the words to the first verse of "The Star-Spangled Banner", most of the words of "Advance Australia Fair", I know the tune to "The Soldier's Song" (Ireland), plus the tune and some of the words to "L'hyme National - Sur nos monts" (Switzerland).

Do I deserve a Blue Peter badge or what?

i know mine, but it's usually pitched to high for me, a 2nd alto. i tend to sing harmony because of that. i definitely know all the words to the 1st verse...few people know there are other verses for it, because they're rarely sung.
