My MIL just asked me if I knew the collective noun for cats. I didn't, so I looked it up - and this is amazing - there are TEN known collective nouns for cats!! And they are all great....

A clowder of cats
A clutter of cats
A glaring of cats
A pounce of cats

And for housecats...

A dout of cats
A nuisance of cats

Kittens...

A kendle of cats
A kindle of cats
A litter of cats

And lastly, for feral cats...

A destruction of cats.

Who'd a thunk it???

Collective nouns are so funny sometimes - what's a favourite of yours?

I used to really love `A parliament of owls'....

I like "a glaring of cats" because it's not just a collective noun.

i read somewhere that most of the collective nouns [the unusual ones] were coined in the middle ages. they even created them for animals who did not gather as a group. this is one of my faves: a leap of leopards.
