I've noticed over the time I've had my kitty that when I come back from little vacations that my kitty's fur doesn't seem as smooth and soft as it usually is (she's normally a very soft kitty). But then after a day or so of me being home, she goes back to being soft again.

Either I'm imagining this or

1) being alone is stressful for her and somehow this makes her fur more coarse.

2) One of the reasons she's normally soft is from oils from my hands when I pet her all the time. But when she's alone, there's no petting to keep her soft.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

Hmmm. Do you brush her?

How's her appetite when you are gone?
Skipping those needed nutrients can affect the cat's fur.

Fred would not groom himself when I left for more that a day. The last time I left for a week, even though my s/o was here caring for the kits, he was in pitiful condition when I got back.

Sounds to me like it makes sense.
Not having the oils from your hands and plus the stress of you being gone probably contributes to it.

Though I haven't quite experienced anything to quite that extreme, I do know that when you pet cats you help distribute the oils the pores on their skin create, which makes the fur softer than if you didn't pet them. Sounds like your kitty has quite a lot of oil that doesn't get distributed without your help!

Don't worry...nothing's wrong with your kitty...it's just that your petting helps her be softer.

I have found that my Hoots looks much more beter in the summer. Its the lack of humidity that comes with heating the house in winter that gets her all staticy and and her hair flattens out. She is like a dust maganet then. Maybe it was just a cold snap?
