Hi all!
Last night I adopted a new cat. She is one years old. I expected a little crying thru the night, but WOW - from about 3 am until 8 am she cried constantly. I got up and went onto the couch and tried to bond with her. I gave her some treats, pet her, talked to her, got her up on the couch and she slept a little curled up next to me. I finally couldn't take the tiredness anymore and went to bed at 8 am until 10 am and she was silent. Now she's under the bed and I heard another little cry.
She is eating well and using her litter box, and I know that nothing is wrong with her, just the newness of the situation for the poor baby.

Is there anything special/different I can do? Or will I just have to wait it out?

Thanks all!

I have been reading that I should ignore her, is that true? I'm heading off to work soon and she's going to be all alone for 8 hours poor baby.

If you don't ignore her, you'll just be encouraging her crying whenever she wants a little attention, or food, or whatever.

It may just be that she's trying to adjust to her new home. Maybe she had a little friend (either cat or human) at the last place she was and she misses her buddy. Cats will sometimes do this when they have a change in their environment until they're comfortable in their new home (see the post about excessive mewing that another lady did).

Another thought...I used to have a cat that just LOVED to meow at night in my kitchen, and figured out that she liked the acoustics in the room, and just loved hearing how her voice sounded. Is she doing it in any particular room?

One more thought, just in case...did you get her checked by the vet when you brought her home? (Not that I think you wouldn't or you hadn't thought of it...it's worth saying just in case. Ya know?) Sometimes a kitty will do that if there's something going on physically.

Heck, it could just be that she's lonely at night. Do you let her in your room at night? Is there any way you would consider it? If you're not able, for whatever reason, I would make sure she has a really comfy little space all her own, like a little two-hole cat house, or something of the likes, and put her toys in it so she knows it's hers.

Anyway, it'll be easier to help if I know those coupla things.

Well, i talked to the foster mom today, and she said that kitty cried for only the first nite when she went to her house. so that's good. hopefully she won't cry too much tonite. She does it everywhere, not in one particular room, and also, i have a studio apartment with a bedroom that doesn't have a door, so she has free reign to the whole house and knows that her litter box and food are in my room.

she was just checked out by the vet 3 weeks ago, so i think she's fine. the foster mom said she probably is calling out to the other cats she has been living with for three weeks.
she has a nice comfy bed with a blanket from the foster mom underneath my bed where she hides.

i am nervous to go home as she has been left alone all day (cause i'm at work). i hope she's okay......

thanks for all your help!

Awww...yeah, it sounds like she misses the friends she had at her other home. She should be fine and much less meowy within a couple weeks.

Well, last nite I was determined to sleep so put in my ear plugs, put my down pillow over my head and ignored her. A couple of times I said out loud "stop it" and she would stop for a long time. It was better last nite. But I woke up to find that she had chewed thru the wire for my cell phone charger!! LOL. why? i don't get it. oh well. she's so cute!! i can't wait to post pictures....

It's important that you stop her from chewing through electrical wires. She can get seriously hurt, if not electrocuted.

I'm not entirely sure what to wrap them in to prevent her from chewing them or if you can spray them with something to deter her, but someone with more knowledge than I should be along to make some suggestions.
