Hello,
I'm considering if I should buy a new sofa made of leather.
How will my cats respond to this? Will they scratch it. I have two Maine Coons 3 and 4 years of age. They are not very avtive. Both indoor and outdoor cats.
I just have to consider first, as the sofa is expensive.
Does anyone have any experience about this?

Do they have a scratching post that they use consistently? If they don't scratch your other furniture, it's unlikely that they'll scratch the leather. I had the same concerns before we brought our two home as we already had a leather sofa. I do keep their claws clipped but I've never seen them put a claw in anything other than their scratching post. Except perhaps my computer chair sometimes when they're stretching up to say hello to me.

I've never had a cat deliberately scratch leather furniture, and we have two leather sofas and a leather chair. You may find some superficial scratches if the cats run across it, or jump from the cat tree on to the sofa, but that's easily prevented by keeping a throw or the like across the back of it.

I also have a leather sofa and was initally concerned. But we have one of those treehouse condos with plenty of scratchposts and have never has a problem with our cat going for the couch. There are a few small tears from her, but that's from when she was young and would fall off the couch or sprint around. Just make sure to keep your cats claws trimmed.

I have two leather sofas, and when i just had Rosie she did put her claws in the side of it when i was in another room, but when i got Sophie she hasn't touched it since and neither has Sophie, so i put it down to boredom with Rosie being an only cat at the time.

We have a leather recliner, and yes, our Hobbes does enjoy tearing the thing to bits. That is, he DID until we bought them a GREAT scratching post. My advice...I wouldn't waste the money until you have them trained to scratch on something else.

I haven't found that he's particularly MORE fond of scratching that particular piece of furniture as opposed to anything else, but he DID go for the gusto, so I would wait a while before purchasing.

The cat scratcher we have is a little cardboard one that's got catnip in it. It's called a SmartyKat Super Scratcher. They GRAVITATED to the thing when we bought it, and we've had basically NO problems with scratching anything else since we bought it.

Hope that helps!!

My friend has a leather sofa and when they got their Ragdoll they were going to have him de-clawed. I talked to them about getting a scratching post and teaching him to use it instead of de-clawing. They did get the scratching post and he has never touched their sofa.

I'm so glad they listened to me.
