Okay, so my mantel is sadly bare. I am not a foofy person, and my style is contemporary/eclectic, but my mantel does need SOMETHING. I had some really cool black and silver swirly branch things of different heights (from the dried flower section of Hobby Lobby, painted by moi) in bud vases on either end, but our cats destroyed them all. So what I need are ideas for things my cats cannot knock off. Ideally I would like them to be things that don't even interest the cats. (The swirly dried-branch things looked amazing, but in retrospect I can see they were too tempting for the cats to resist. Not that they ever tried.)

How about some interesting pillar candles with contemporary styled holders? You might try putting carpet tape under them to make them less likely to move. You could make a grouping of several different heights.

I love that idea for my family room, which I'd like to be relaxed with a funky edge. But our living room is just a smidge too formal for that, I think. However, like I said, I'll definitely think about that for downstairs.

Ooh, I like that idea. What is this magical carpet tape of which you speak?

Something similar to this:

carpet tape

Home Depot might not have this particular type, but should have something similar anyway. Likewise Lowe's, even Ace Hardware might carry something like it (Ace is good about having "odd" stuff I've found.) I actually do use the stuff on carpet runners to keep them from moving. Basically it's a very heavy-duty double-sided tape. If you've got a flooring company close by you might be able to find some there as well.

Photocubes are good with any decor and can be a talking point if you put some interesting pix in them.

you could hang a mirror or a picture above the mantel to take away from the actual mantel being bare....
