Ginger's MOT

Poor Ginger had his MOT today, including full blood test. When we got in the room, I mentioned his clumping fur first, so she groomed him, and it took 3 of us to hold him for her to do certain bits. Then she realised she had to take blood, and she has just come back from a 2 week break, so was a bit rusty. 3 attempts later, she gave up and the vet nurse did it in one go. Not a happy cat. Then I had to ask her to look at his claws (she had noticed they were long), so she had to clip them too, so he really hates the vet now!! She thinks his fur clumping is just cos he struggles to reach with being overweight, I am quite happy to keep on top of it, but he really hates being brushed. His results will be back either late tomorrow eve or Wed. I don't think there is anything wrong, but at 14, it is better to pay for blood tests to be told he is fine, in my opinion.

what does a full blood test test for? apart from diabetes...

The blood test he has had will test for liver, kidney, thyroid, white and red blood cell count, and poss something else. More pricey than the standard one, but it includes the thyroid, so I will pay extra for it, as normally the thyroid has to be tested separately.

Good luck with the results. I hope they are favourable.

Well, his blood test results are finally back (there was a mix up with getting them to the lab!!). THey show he is in a good condition for his age, one of his liver levels are slightly up and she thinks it may be an indication of hypertension, so we are going to get his blood pressure taken to be on the safe side. It will only cost £12, so he is going up when I have an afternoon off in 2 weeks (not what I thought I would be doing with my afternoon off, that will be 3 weeks in a row I will have been to my vets!!) and he will have to stay a couple of hours, the poor babe. She said that if he does have it, it is in early stages, and is very easily treated. Am so glad I did have his bloods done as a matter of course rather than waiting until he showed some symptoms.

WEll, his blood pressure is fine. He has put weight on though. Seeing as his diet hasn't been altered since before his annual checkup (where he had lost weight) I know it isn't the amount I am feeding him, so he is obviously eating elsewhere. The vet thinks I should reduce his food intake, but he gets 1 85g tin of HiLife a day (and doesn't always eat all of that), and 20g of James Wellbeloved biscuits (of which he eats less than half, due to having no teeth, it is a little treat for coming home), so I really don't think he gets enough to reduce. My neighbour has been asked again to keep an eye on him, I am fed up of doing as much as I can to get him to lose weight (and getting him to play is a losing battle in the winter) for my neighbours to let him eat there and put weight on. Even my non cat lover neighbour told me he looked overweight today - he does only weigh 5.61kg, but the vet nurse would like him to weigh about 4.5!!

Well, I'm glad he is doing well. Hopefully he can lose a little weight!

What does MOT mean?

Can't fully remember what it stands for, but it was basically his annual checkup, including full blood tests. As I have senior cats, I like mine to have them, they do have another checkup when they have their vaccinations, and they have both been going to the weight clinic monthly, although Pebbles only has to go twice monthly now.

Oh, its been driving me crazy! MOT? Monthly something?

My kits are all babies, less than 2 years old, so we don't visit the vet much!

MOT in the UK all cars over three years old have to have a road worthy test every year, Ministry Of Transport test (MOT) and it has come to be use for anything that has a yearly check up.

I NEVER would have figured that out! Thanks so much. Imagine, everyone taking their cats for their Ministry of Transport test!
