Well, Buddy has been sick and I took him to the vet and they did some bloodwork. Everything for virus's were negative
, but they said that there were some levels that were elevated, and it looks like pancreatitis.

They said to bring him in this afternoon, and they will give special food, meds and maybe IV fluids.

Has anyone had any experience regarding this? Thats all they told me, and I have a ton of questions and I am not going back to the vet for another 6 hours and I am going nuts? What cause's it, whats the treatment etc etc. And of course will Buddy be okay!!!!

Any input would be great!!!!

i dont know what causes it but the treatment they describe (meds, most likely an antibiotic) fluids and a bland diet is the usual treatment

some serious cases are treated with steroids but they try to reserve those for only when needed as they can cause diabetes in cats

hope your kitty feels better soon!!

Usually a bad diet causes it. i.e. feeding ham and things like that!

Oh heavens, Bijou begs and begs for a bit of ham every night and it breaks my heart to say no, so I break down and give him a little about 3 times a week.

I don't feed anything that is fatty, my vet asked. I feed him Nutro wet foods. They gave him four different shots, including antibiotics and Vitamins.

I have to feed him Beachnut baby food stage 1 meat for a week. I was given a nutrient suppliment called Nutri-cal and Amoxicillin and some pills, not sure what they are though. The label was hand written by his tech, it says "Pred 5mg" 1/2 pill 2x per day for 7 days. I am taking him back for a recheck in one week.

The vet showed me his blood levels and everything was okay except the part that indicated pancreatitis, supposidly is rare in cats and most vets miss it the first time. Thank god he noticed it first time

I read that a fatty diet usually is responsible. I have only had Buddy for 2 months, and he was a stray, so maybe this has been a problem for a while and it went unnoticed until the symptoms appeared. I'm sure he didn't have a very good diet out on the streets.

He also told me that he is part Siamese, Which he said is the reason he had gingivitis, he said he was genetically prone to it and to brush regularly. He was a great vet, I left feeling much better!!!!

pred is a steroid. That's wonderful news. Sounds like he'll be fine and you found a good vet.

My bunny had pancreatitis but he was geriatric at the time of the diagnosis. I blamed it on the Lucky Charns which he begged for an I gave him. In my defense, I was not the one who started him on the cereal - that was my baby brothetr who shared that and some chips with him. He loved the chips too - much better than clover it seemed!! But on occasion, I would give him Lucky Charms because he knew the rustling of the box and would beg for them, sighhhh!!! I know, I should not have been such a pushover. But he was 13 at the time of diagnosis. He did fine with steroids and lots of yogurt and very healthy RABBIT food!
