October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month!
Since its this time...just curious of how many of you have either survived, battled or have a loved one that has battled/survived breast cancer....My mom found out in May of this year that she had breast cancer. Had her breast removed and another reconstructed...been going through chemo and now on the 27th shes due to have her last breast surgery to put the permanent implant in. Its been a hard long road but we are so fortunate and i am thankful for each day that i have her!!!

I don't know anyone that has it nor survived it.. but I do support breast cancer research quite often.. just bought a fe wof those pink ribbons a few days ago.. and went to buy some of the breast cancer livestrong type bracelets, but they had sold out the day they got them!

I pray for all of those peole out there, suffering from any kind of cancer and I hope that one day soon they will be able to find a cure or something.

Very good thread..I myself have not personally known anyone with breast cancer but my Aunt died from cancer back in 1995. I made sure that I went out and bought my pink wrist band this month to support the cause.

I lost a very dear friend this year. It started in the breasts and even though she initially went through two full courses of chemo and radiation, masectomy and then seemingly went into remission, the cancer came back in her bones.

After the masecetomy, did they think she had cancer cells anywhere else? My mom was tested and came up negative....but i am worried it will come back.

My mother lost the battle with breast cancer in 1985. Since then there have been many improvements concerning treatment. In 1995, my only child and daughter was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. She was treated with very aggressive chemo and radiation. Her prognosis according to the drs. was not good. However, through good medical treatment and mostly the work of God and prayers, she survives and has had no recurrence of cancer. I will pray for your mother. I think another thing that helped my daughter was she was able to maintain a very positive attitude the whole time. She lost her job and her friends because they didn't know how to deal with someone who was at that time considered terminal. Now she has even a better job working in the oncology dept of a major hosp in NC. At the time of her cancer she was 33 years old. Many times, people are so frightened with the diagnosis they give up. We serve a big God and he is able to deliver people and heal them of cancer. You tell your mother that people are praying and believing for her.

^ You are so right about the positive attitude.
Its like an anchor that moors you to sanity.

My mom was diagnosed with Breast Cancer almost 7 years back. She had one of her breast removed. That time I think I was in 7th grade and more than my mom, it was a HUGE shock for me. My bro and I thought she was gonna die. And plus when she lost all her hair due to chemo it was all just way too weird. I am soo embarrased to admit it here that actually that time I didnt want my mom to come to my school meetings as she was bald. I was just way too stupid and dumb back then. Instead of us supporting her, she was supporting us!! She seriously is the greatest women ever. Never ever had I seen her crying or depressed. Infact later after she recovered she also started a breast cancer awareness/support group. Often she tells me that the disease opened new doors for her. She discovered so many qualities that were buried in her. She tried to trace all her long lost college and school friends through directories...and she was able to meet them after almost 30years. She also started writing and translating breast cancer related stuff. It was more like a blessing in disguise for her. It completely altered her personality for the better and made her a completely different person.

Thank you very much! My mom has actually been outstanding throughout this whole ordeal. After many days of being strong for eachother we both broke down and started crying together. I think we really needed that. I think we were kinda scared to really talk about it in the open. We have our moments but i admire her for her strength and courage.

I'm sorry to hear about your mother, I hope all goes well.

My step-grandmother died of breast cancer about 10 years ago.

My mother has a friend at work who got diagnosed with breast cancer (I believe her mother had it) and had the masectomy right away and all seems well.

Another friend has a mother with breast cancer as well, and also liver cancer I think - it's somehow connected.

To those of you who have lost women in your life to breast cancer, my heart goes out to you.
To those of you who have struggled personally or along with someone, and have beat the disease with treatment, that is why raising awareness about this disease by recognizing it with an entire month rather than a day or even a week is so important in order to seek a cure.

Fortunately, I have not lost anyone I have known personally to breast cancer, but I have participated in raising funds for medical research, which, as a woman, is the least I can do.

My mother passed away on January 27, 2000 from breast cancer. This was after fighting it aggressively for 3 years, 2 years in remission, and another round of fighting it for the better part of a year.

For those battling it currently either yourselves or with a loved one, don't take my mother as a prime example of what could happen. She had a very elusive type that didn't ever form tumors. They said only 1 in 10,000 cases is like hers.

It's a horrible disease, and the treatment can be just as bad - at least temporarily. However, I'm always so glad to hear that they have again found another new treatment, another new breakthrough in diagnosing or treatment. It has really come so far in just 5 years!

My friend died of breast cancer aged 33, she refused any form of treatment, and i often think that she would have probably still been here today if she'd had it

Thank God they've come a long with with regards to treatment etc.... so buy your pink ribbons girls because that £1 that we pay here in the UK goes a long way towards research
