A new TV program being broadcast in the middle east is saying that terrorism is giving Islam a bad name. Also that Muslims are suffering because of the actions of a few radicals.

What do you think!?!

Not being a muslim and not having seen the show, it's hard for me to judge whether or not the show is disrespectful to Islam.

It does seem to go without saying that a TV show that tackles such a sensitive issue would anger or offend some people, for many different reasons. It just worries me that many people will see that anger as another sign that most muslims are sympathetic to terrorism.
There isn't much said about whether the people who are offended are the majority and the article doesn't give much detail about why they are offended.

I think the makers of this show have a HUGE amount of guts. They are to be applauded for what they are trying to do to stop the killing.

Good for them to take on such a subject! It would be about the same if a network aired a program of how the radical Christians (i.e. the ones protesting at funerals) are driving people away from Christianity. There would be some, particularly on the internet, who would raise a big stink, but you have to hope that the base message gets through to the mainstream public. The difference is that I don't think that Christians, no matter how radical, wouldn't kill anyone associated with the project.

It seemed very hopeful to me. Sure people are going to complain, and those are the ones who get mentioned. But someone put a lot of effort into making the show. And it is Muslims making it, so not like if some guy from Chicago is preaching to them. If it changes a few minds, and helps bring peace it is good. Even just getting people talking is a good thing!

And it sounds like it isn't the first time this has been tried!

Oddly enough, there's no mention of this on the English Al Jazeera site. All those involved in the show have a lot of guts, because they'll probably become the targets of some disgruntled fanatics.

No comment on the TV show 'cos I haven't seen it but....
...a letter on teletext from a British Muslim, addressed to all Muslim extremists considering implementing terror attacks, said something along these lines:

"When news of the earthquake in Pakistan arrived, volunteers from UK jumped on the first available plane to get there, then immediately started helping to pull survivors out of the wrecked buildings. These people show true heroism, they are not your enemies."

What a letter!

How those horrible people protesting at soldiers' funerals could call themselves Christian is beyond me, but I agree with what you said completely.

You're right, but unfortunately they get the press. It's not just them, it's any of the fundamentalist extremists. Who was that televangelist who said we should take out a world leader recently? That got a lot of media coverage, and if you didn't know any better would think he represents a lot of Christians!

I'm sure a lot of Muslims would say the same thing you did about the terrorists.

That was Pat Robertson, founder of the "Christian Coalition", owner of the Christian Broadcasting Network, and former presidential candidate. http://www.guardian.co.uk/usa/story/...555178,00.html

I talked with an Islamic friend about this today and forwarded him the link. He said he could see where some would get offended by the title of the story as this perpetuates the "71 virgins" theme that just is not true (he said a media-made thing) it that aspect as this theme seems to cast Islam in a bad/frivolous light.

Killing people to make a politcal point is enough to put terrorists in a bad light to me.

Can someone explain the funerals - radical Christians connection, I'm not familiar with it.

Wasn't the killing of so-called "abortion doctors" an example of killing to make a political point? That's how I saw it.
