hi, my young semi-feral lives outdoors and I want to make sure she is warm for the winter. I made a cardboard box for her shes likes it alot it keeps her out of the rain. What other stuff Should i be putting in there towels..? I am also planning on spaying her soon I was wondering what the best way to take her to the vet is without her feel like i betrayed her. Its getting colder now and I am guessing mating season is ending so I have till next spring to spay her right?

First off cardboard will not hold up unless you cover it with a waterproofing of some kind. A tarp or some plastic. Use straw (if available) for bedding because it is so insulating, and if you can put something around the inside of the box to keep the sides from contracting with the cold, that works as well. I have used those stryrofoam coolers in the past- they make great insulated cat beds for cold and rainy weather.

One of my barn cats (years ago) gave birth in the winter. As soon as the kittens were old enough to walk, they walked out of the nest (which we couldn't find) and froze to death.
Please get her spayed before spring!

thanks for the quick replies! I have my canopy still up and its under that and a table so its not getting that much rain on it just when the wind blows it on it. I just need somthing different when i take the canopy down. I was thinking about getting one of those things you were talking about erin but this was a plastic storage container. Do you think that would be good too? She also uses my garage for shelter but latley shes been in the box. Is there any way I can convince her to stay in the garage?

Katie thanks for the link I am gonna check out the ones closes to me.
Have any of you been able to take a feral to the vet without trapping? Shes almost like a housecat she sleeps on my lap, lets me pet her.

Straw or wood shavings are much better than towels or blankets. They provide better insulation and are better at handling moisture and dirt.

With my ferals I use an icechest with a hole cut in the side, I cover the hole with a flap of plastic to help keep out the wind, rain and snow. In the evenings I put a heat disc inside found at this website

This web site has some other cold weather ideas for ferals.
