I got engaged on the 7th (
), and my boyfriend... oops! FIANCÉ, gave me a beautiful, slim engagement ring with a single diamond mounted on it. It's gorgeous, and has particular sentimental value since it belonged to my grandmother before. He had it resized to a 4 1/2, which turned out to be too loose. We brought it back in yesterday and had it resized again to a 4 1/4. Do your fingers swell at the end of the day, or when you're excited? Because it fit fine when we picked it up, and now it's too loose again... I had to put a piece of tape around my finger to keep it from spinning around. I heard about gold beads, but the jewler didn't seem thrilled with that idea, and I'm thinking that a size 4 would be too small. Any ideas?

Yes, your fingers swell at the end of the day.

Congrats on your engagement!!!!!!!!!!

I would suggest you go with a size 4. I had that problem with my ring too, and although it felt a little odd when my hands were a bit swollen, I got used to it. Your finger will "acclimate" to the band width and size. Because it's a slim band, you shouldn't have a problem getting it off even if it is a little tight. It will also fit a little tighter when you have your wedding ring on with it.

You don't want to mess around with diamonds! Mine chipped about a month after I got it
and it's not like they can fix it!

You may also want the prongs checked regularly...they get loose!

Hope this helps!

Yup, your finger size will change throughout the day. Even washing your hands in very hot or very cold water can change the size of your fingers by that much. I wouldn't worry too much, tho -- I think you're just hyper-conscious of the ring now bcuz you're still getting used to wearing it. If it fit when you picked it up, and it's not uncomfortably tight when your hands are warm and swollen, I'd leave it alone.

PS, I really hope ring sizes are different in Canada than they are down here -- I have fairly slender fingers, and I wear a 6 1/2-7 - you'd have toothpicks for fingers @ 4 1/4!!!!
But you'd be able to buy really cute children's jewelry

My fingers are small too and I originally had to have my ring sized down to a 4 and 1/2. I actually was going to go back and get it sized down to 4 and 1/4 because it seemed too big when I first got it. I never did though and I am glad because it seems in the mornings my fingers swell and the rings fits fairly snug.

Also, like someone mentioned, you are very concious of the ring because it is new. It actually drove me nuts when I first got it
I have had it for 8 months now and it feels like it's been there forever. I have even had to double check to make sure it was there before.

You can ask about a ring guard, I think it's a small piece of plastic that fits on the underside of the ring to hold it in place, it's clear in color and thin like the band part of the ring, just till you can figure out for sure if you need to take it down more

Yeah, you will get used to it, and reflexively check if its there.
I have developed this habit of leaving mine on the nightstand...it's kind of funny because I stared at it so much when I first got it (year and a half ago), and constantly was making sure it was still on my finger...oh well. Husband gets irritated too...I might have to work on that!

I really don't ever take mine off. I even wear it to bed. The only time it comes off is when I am putting on lotion. When I am doing that I hold it in my mouth, not inside my mouth but I press it between my lips. The reason why I think I do that is because the first week I had it I had taken it off and set it up on the shelf in the bathroom while I took a shower. My fiance walked by and took the ring and hid it from me. I freaked out while he let me go on believing it was missing.

I would wear it for a few weeks before having it sized down. That way you can determine how much your fingers do swell.

I have mine at 5 1/2 (and I thought they were small!) and sometimes they spin and somtimes it feels like sausages squeezed to tight.

When I lost a good deal of weight last fall/summer my fingers shrunk, and I was sleeping and my ring fell off while I was asleep! Well lemme tell you, I didn't realize it until I was out and about with my dad and started really freaking out. My mom found it ain the bed and hid it from me, the wench.

Unfortunately I gained all the weight, and when my wedding rolled around, I had to have it sized up to go on my other finger. But now it's loose again so who knows.

When I got my ring from John, it was a 6 1/2, way too big! I had to have it sent in and resized to a 5 and when I went in and got it, it was at the end of the day and my hands were so swollen, but now it fits perfectly, it could be a 4 1/2 tho, but a 5 fits pretty good without it being too tight!

CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR ENGAGEMENT!!

I had a metal one that was undetectable unless you looked at the palm side of your finger. I agree that it might be your best bet for now. My hands change a lot depending on the weather and how much salt I ate the day before.

I'd agree with the ring guard idea too, if your hands swell & shrink a lot.

I think the perfect size is loose, but not so loose that if you shook your hand it would fall off. My fingers get bigger when it's warm and smaller when it's colder but it's hardly noticable at all.

Congratulations!!

Under the cats, mostly.
your fingers do swell, not just at the end of a day, but when you're too hot or too cold. So you're probably right to have it fitted to a 4 1/4, because that will be at a neutral temperature.
