Cost efficient is fine, but too many people are penny wise and pound foolish.

I work at an emergency vet clinic and see the consequences of these decisions daily.

For example, there was the little black and white cat who came in a few weeks ago. The client had given her Zodiac brand OTC flea treatment and now the cat was trembling from head to toe and could barely stand.

So for a cost breakdown:

Cheapflea treatment: $10 for 2 or 3 doses
Emergency visit fee: $80
Emergency doctor exam fee: $80
Fluids, injectable medication, and a bath in the hospital: $100+
Total cost: close to $300

Or another case, a dog whose people didn't notice that his flea collar wasn't working. The fleas had made him so anemic that he was too weak to stand. The cost breakdown in this case:

Emergency visit
Emergency doctor exam
Place catheter
IV fluids
Blood work: PCV/total solids (tests for anemia and dehydration, repeated in this case to gauge success of treatment), blood chemistry and electrolytes, complete blood count, urinalysis, blood typing
Blood transfusions - two of 'em
ICU hospitalization - two nights
Total cost: about $2500

Versus doing it the right way from the start:
Regular vet office visit: $40-$50
3 month supply of safe, quality flea treatment: around $40
Total cost: $80-$90

Total savings: from $200-$2000, plus a ton of stress and potentially your cat's life.

I'm definitely not opposed to saving money where possible. The vaccines given at the local Department of Health clinics for $5 are the very same ones given at the local vet office for $25, for instance. But you have to be smart about things. Making foolish decisions to save a few bucks can easily end up costing you hundreds or thousands of dollars more in the long run, or worst of all it it could cost your cat his life.

I understand.
But once again it is not up to me to take them to the vet. "I" dont have the money for them, my parents do. My dad thought they were fine and convinced me it was a waste of time to see the vet but now that they have fleas and worms Its a more realistic issue.
You think I don't want to take them to the vet? I keep badgering my mom everyday about it until she finally does.
The reason I made this thread isn't to know everything, its to know peoples' "opinions" on these issues as a reference to outside information.
For example now I know not to buy off the counter medicine

Just by making these threads I learn more about the problems.
And since the vet my friend has sounds like a moron I want to pick a good vet and everything else that follows.

So in conclusion its not up to me to take them to the vet. All I can do is feed them and clean after them, its my parents who make the bigger decisions, and now that they realize the threats we can actually get them to the vet, Ill try my best to get them by this weekend.

Maybe you should show your parents your threads....maybe that will get them into gear

Yeah well I just called the vet and made an appointment for Saturday, though I might get them tomorrow or maybe even today.

Zoggy, when I took Matilde (the little one) to the vet for deworming, they gave her Strongid. Dr. Lara adviced that it would one or two weeks to get rid of the parasites, if she had them. Luckily, she didn't have anything, according to the fecal tests, so is that a relief or what? Anyway, Matilde is due for her Strongid next Wednesday as a preventive measure. Small kitties like ours need a lot of preventive care. I am sorry to hear that the kitties have worms. About the cost, I cannot give you any numbers as Dr. Lara is a good friend and gave me the Strongid for free. She even offered to "adopt" her and take her to her clinic for more tests and even for spaying. I guess, I'm lucky and Matilde is luckier that have such a good fairy godmother. Keep up the good work you're doing with these babies. For your posts, I can see that your parents finally agreed to keep them and I'm happy for you. Keep reading the good advice all these experts are giving you. They know more than us!

Ok im taking them to the vet in two hours.
Since im going to be doing most of the talking what do I say or ask?
I gotta sound proffesional here (even though I know nothing).
What questions do I ask so this 130$ visit wont come back and haunt me in a week with a brain tumor or something?

You dont have to act proffesional........

Ask them to give the kit a general physical......

Ask them to check a stool sample........

Ask them to check him for fleas......

and tell them about the worms.......

Good Luck

I tried to stay out of this because I too am "cost effective" but when it comes right down to it I take them in when they need help, because I am not qualified to give it.... I just want to say I'm so glad your parents finally came around, my parents were like that too growing up and while my cat "Squirt" lived to be 13, he had a cough most of his life, was overweight, and suffered from worms frequently. Sometimes parents just aren't perfect, I will try to remember this thread for when my daughter is old enough to bring home every animal she finds on the brink of death

Ha, unless you want to go bankrupt I wouldn't recommend to do that.

Anyway, my kittens are the belles of the ball. "Aww... OMG... CUTE... OMG IDENTICAL?!!?! NO WAY?! OMG CUTE".
The doctor guy gave em booster shots and inserted some green substance in their mouths through a siringe for their worms. He took em in the basement and he is giving em a flea bath and all that.
Its funny since they dont really have a real name they put tags on them that said "A" and "B". LoL.

But the weirdest thing is they behaved EXTREMELY well.
When giving the shots they didnt try to break away, scratch, bite or meow.

They'll give em Frontline collars and they said to bring a stool sample next time.

Yes. Good care that costs 200$!!!!

With that much paid I better not see another flea for the next 3 years.
There should be a warantee for this.

Oh and their offical names are now Mishka and Pushkin.
Mishka means bear. Hes a bear because he's clumsy and mischievous.
Puskin was a famous Russian poet, and since our little guy is such a clean pooper and eater we decided to call him that.

Yes, well. I look at their skin and see no fleas. Although I do see sudden spics of black but that may just be my paranoia. I mean, they ARE black/silver :p

Oh and I think they became dumber than ever after that booster shot.
Pushkin was licking the carpet while Mishka was biting him in the tail from behind.
Mishka likes to abuse Pushkin apparently. But if you put them in seperate rooms they'll start meowing.
Oh and um I heard castration is like 130$. Why is that? I heard people here got their cats neutered and spayed for like 30 bucks.

Glad to hear Mishka and Pushkin's (cute names) appointment went well! $200 isn't bad for shots, exam and medication!

As for spay/nueter, if you live in a big city or close enough to one... odds are you can find a low cost clinic or mobile unit that will have reasonable prices.

WOW! The only time I ever paid anywhere NEAR that much for a neuter was my dog who was about $100 .... But he weighed 120 POUNDS! I mean that was a LOT of anesthesia! Check around on that price for sure.
