I use Litter Mate combined with clay litter. Litter Mate causes clay litter to clump and in my opinion, it clumps better than every brand of clumping litter out there (and I've tried them all). It also makes the litter nearly odor free. With 12 cats here, it is terribly important to control odors in my house.

First investment is a bit high as you have to fill each box to at least 3 inches to allow it to work right. But after that, you scoop out the waste, then only top off the box to keep the 3 inch level. You never change it out, only need to pour one box into another to clean the box occasionally (if they aim high when the pee). You would need to replace it only if you have a parasite infection that gets into the litter.

I tried this on a whim, and haven't fully replaced the litter in my house for a year, yes I said a year. I replace boxes on a regular basis and unless the cats hit the plastic, the used boxes don't even have an odor to it. Yup, sounds to good to be true, but again, with 12 cats, I think this is the best product ever.

I did the math of the cost of this. After the initial investment, your cost goes way down. I used to use about 40 pounds of clumping a week and now go thru a 40 pound bag of clay in about a month, plus the Litter Mate. I'm saving close to $1000 a year on litter. You have to order it online, or if you are in the midwest, the vendor goes to cat shows and sells it there. His daughter just started to work for him and she is going to try to get the product further out such as areas like Denver.

To clarify, do you mean it turns regular old-fashioned clay litter into clumping litter?

Thanks

Wow, I never realise that about Litter Mate Litter brand.

anyhoo, we use the good old cheap stuff. I have found Target brand to be really good. It's not too dusty and it sells for less than $5 for 14lbs. You can get the motherload 27 lb-er for about $6. The cats don't seem to mind it either...at least they've never protested.
I use to love Fresh Scent though. It just got too expensive after my boyfriend and I combined our cats.

Arm & Hammer is my favorite. I had to get Scoops last time b/c the store was out of Arm & Hammer, A & H is definitely better.

I use Fresh Step. I have been through a lot of different litters and that was the only one I really loved.

Thanks for the tip Momofmany! I'm thinking of trying the Littermate. Are you using the regular clay litter that is larger in granular size than the clumping litter? What is the ratio of Littermate that you need to add to the plain litter?

we use petsmart exquisicat unscented in 2 boxes. but i have to switch to something less dusty. DH is complaining about the dust ALOT. we're going to see if we can find everclean unscented, otherwise go back to arm & hammer unscented.

we also use tidy cats red bucket in the other 2 boxes. raven seems to have developed an allergy to the other tidy cats scents. (licks his back legs bald, and sometimes scabby if i get the wrong color) he never used to be...this developed after tidy cats changed to their "new better clumping formula."

we don't use all-natural litters, cause my cats don't like them. we've tried them (doing the slow transition thing) and the cats just said no way.

It's 2 parts clay litter to 1 part Littermate. Yes, it is the regular clay that is larger in size than the clumping kind. I buy clay litter without a lot of dust as you have to mix the 2 and it can get dusty if you use really cheap clay litter. You don't need to buy scented clay litter - the Littermate absorbs the smell.

I just checked out the website for Littermate. Had never heard of it but it sounds wonderful, especially with Momofmany's recommendation!!

Next question - could the combo of Littermate plus clay litter work in a self-cleaning litterbox? (I have the Litter Maid.)

I may have to give this a try!

Absolutely wouldn't recommend it. If they have a high volume pee, the clumps are very large and also they clump pretty solid. I would suspect that it would break the machine - the clumps are too heavy and would break the rakes.

I like the Small Spaces myself...it's not too dusty, it doesn't track for miles and miles like the Swheat Scoop did, the clumps are high enough quality for me, and both cats find it acceptable. It does do a better job of cutting the smell in my little studio, at least better than World's Best and Swheat Scoop, neither of which clumped that great.
