My Emma Needs some Diversity Training! LOL

My neighbors are adding on to their house, so they have a pretty constant stream of workers going in and out--since we're in Chicago the houses are about 4 feet apart, so they have to walk by the front window to get to their truck. Miss Emma has now taken to sitting in the front window and watching them come and go, and I noticed something funny (well, sort of funny) today. The crew putting on their siding is mostly latino guys, but the guys who are the contractors and their superiors are all Polish and Eastern European.
If one of the Polish, white-skinned guys walks byt the front window, no response from Emma.
When one of the Latino guys walks by, she growls at them!!

My cat is racist!

Just another one of her little quirks that confirms, in my mind, that she may be the weirdest little cat I've ever known.

Get that girl some sensitivity training! Reminds me of the dog, Brian, on The Family Guy. What is it with racist animals??

I know this is supposed to be a humorous thread...but I wonder if something happened to Emma before you got her that mades her fearful of latino men? I know cats have LONG memories, especially of the bad things. They never forget the bad things.

That is very true..my mom used to have a cat named Tigger that growled and hissed at grown women..he really disliked my mom but loved my dad and I (I was 8 years old when we found him). The female vets couldn't even work on him.

The woman that had him before us hit him and yelled at him ..maybe something like that happened with your kitty?

or perhaps you are right and he's just unique!

You know, now that I think about it--that's definitely possible! She was found in an area of town that has a pretty high latino population, and I know the girl who found her figured out who her previous owners were (they lived in her apartment complex and had thrown her out after she had kittens) but I'm not sure if her previous owners were latino...its entirely possible.

What's funny is her favorite person, besides myself and my husband, is one of my friends who is part Indian/ part scottish and so her skin tone is similar to that of a latino...but maybe she only dislikes latino men?

Fascinating, these little weirdos!

I had a dog once who did not like very dark skinned people. I got her when she was 6 years old, so have no idea if she learned it on her own? Hopefully not through any abuse!

I had a bunny who separated her litter into two nests, one mostly black bunnies, and one of mostly white bunnies.

I guess animals can be a silly as people sometimes!

DH's parents had a horse who was terrified of him. He is 6'3" tall. They wanted him to train the horse, but it was too frightened. It was fine with his Dad, who is considerably shorter. I'm sure that was from being mistreated!

I had a horse, an Arabian mare, who I kid you not, would only hang around with other Arabians! "Racism" isn't exactly the sole province of homo sapiens . One time I thought I'd caught her out (she was pasture boarded,) said "Aha! Gotcha!" and asked the owner about the new gelding she had take up with for a while. Nope. 7/8 Arab, but distinctly Thoroughbred in type.

Leo growls at male children...since he was once a stray, I think maybe he was the victim of the little boys that throw stones or shoot BB's at the stray cats!

This reminds me of a story my dad told me when he was in the Marines. They had a bulldog at their camp who absolutely hated anything small and dark! He would tear up tires, boots, black or dark clothes, etc. You can imagine the panic when a little black boy was visiting the camp.

(Don't worry, a marine got him out of the way before anything terrible happened. )

My Mom's dog is that way with black men. We think it's from my step brothers friend...

I have 2 men that delivers mail to my end of town. Mike is my regular carriers, but on his days off, Jeff delivers the mail. When Mike delivers the mail, Emmy has no problem, but when Jeff does, Emmy will growl and swat at the window, trying to get him! Both men are white, so that's not it. The really funny thing about it is Jeff is a huge, huge cat lover. While Mike is more of a dog lover. I've told Jeff maybe the reason she doesn't like him, is because he keeps bringing the bills. I told him maybe if all he brought me was junk mail, maybe Emmy would like him more.

Just remember cats don't have to explain. They know what they are doing and why.

Yup, it's official. Emma's racist.
She just growled up a storm at the UPS guy, who is black.

Maybe it's because she doesn't see Jeff very often so he remains a "stranger?"

You know how men say that us women are hard to figure out? Well, cats are even harder to figure out!!!! I don't know what makes cats react the way they do to some things. 'Cause the other day, I got an UPS delivery, I only get them about 2-3 times a year, and Emmy had no problem at all with the UPS carrier. And, yes it was another white man.
(But, I like to tease Jeff about Emmy's growling at him, and "threaten" him that I'll have to let her attack him if he keeps bringing me bills. )
