Just a reminder for members, taken from our guidelines:

Solicitations- the needs of rescue workers are great and we recognize this fact. To care for multiple cats, find suitable homes, good vet care, food, etc. is costly. From time to time you will see some posts come up to ask for donations for a cause. It is YOUR responsibility to check out these solicitors to the best of your ability. Ask for references, phone numbers, call around the area and find out if this is a legitimate cause or a scam. The Catsite.com does not stand behind any solicitation of funds for any reason that appear in the forums except for one, CWSI. Be very careful before you send any money: no matter how effective the plea is, check it out first before opening your wallet.

Fleas and a urinary tract infection are not that difficult to treat. its not that sad, just look for a low cost clinic and all should be well. As for liver disease, you obviously took the cat to the vet to be DIAGNOSED as having this right? So you could afford that, did the vet let you walk away without treating your cat without trying to help you out with payment plan options?

If you can't afford the bills, then either give him away or have him put to sleep. Don't let him be miserable either way.

Uhh I think this might be some kind of scam thing, the website is setup to look like a blog forum posting or something but it doesn't link to anywhere.

If I am wrong I apologize but it sure looks fishy to me

That is why we warn people. Be VERY SURE that any time you open up your wallet and your heart that it is for a legitimate cause.

Loathe as I am to ber skeptical of someone, I would understand someone seeking assistance for a sick cat but while end stage liver disease can be fatal, the description here does not sound like it is. And these symptoms can be easily treated. I am not a vet (obviously!) but like many on this site, have much experience caring for cats. A uti often PRECEEDS kidney disease so those two could be together but I just do not think it likely. And many cats - especially those allowed outdoors get fleas. It will not - according to my vet - cost that much for the treatment needed by this kitty. Frankly, this story makes no sense -- both in terms of the costs cited (either they have a really expensive vet - For example: "initial exam, x-ray, and blood work which totalled $500" - that might cost $100 but that's an inflated price if I ever saw one. And there are many differential diagnostics for liver disease or well... I don't know!)

Most of the meds used to stimulate appetite - if one has difficulty with the bills - can be purchased as generics at a pharmacy for not much money. Diazepam for example in generic form is approx $5 for 100 5 mg tabs. (plus whatever fee the pharmacy charges which is anywhere from $1 to $11 here anyway). And why ask for money for surgery that has yet to be performed?

Plus, most vets will allow you to set up a payment plan. I honestly think this web site should be investigated. Unless one asks for the money to go directly to the vet for a specific cat, I have to seriously question it.and showing a picture of a cat and using the cutline "He's going to lie down now. He isn't feeling so well." is beyong exploitive!!
If this kitty is really ill - I suggest you discuss it with your vet and set up payment plans, If you cannot afford it, there are organizations that help very ill cats. IF NOT, then please do not play with people's emotions. I find this very upsetting!

This person ought to be ashamed.. If it is really the truth, they should put the cat to sleep instead of letting it suffer.

Hey guys, it isn't up to any of us to make judgements.

It is up to us to each one of us to be careful, cautious and knowledgeable about donating for any cause, no matter what.

Most of the newcomers won't know of this story, but years ago, someone posted a wretchingly heartbreaking post about needing money for a cat that was sick. Well long story short, many opened their hearts and wallets and gave.

A few months later, same poster came back with photos of her vacation, and thanked us all for her lovely time on an island.

So be careful, all of you, and this thread is now closed.
