My poor little bottle fed bub went from nasty runny poo (the formula was crap) to constipation (on the better food).

She was given an enema yesterday and the poo that came out was as hard as a rock and nearly three times the width of her anus!!!

I have been recommended to dilute a formula a little but is there anything else I can give her that will make her bowels run a little smoother?

Thanks

My Marlee had a problem with constipation a week or so ago, and many on her told me to use canned pumpkin (plain) which helped so much. But Marlee is around 12 weeks or so, I'm not too sure if you could do it with such a tiny baby? Maybe you can mix it with lots of water. I'm sure someone else will know more!

You take just a tiny bit of canned pumkin and dissolve it in boiling water stirring well to break up the pulp. I just boil water in a cup in the microwave, then add the pumpkin and keep stirring. Once it has cooled, add a bit of it to every feeding.

Please be careful heating water by itself in a cup in the microwave - it can explode. It has to do with the manner in which the microwave heats the liquid and as far as I am aware, it only happens with water and not other liquids you heat in the microwave. If you put a little bit of anything else in the cup with the water it will prevent this from happening, i.e., perhaps a bit of the pumpkin in the water before heating.

I've heard of the water exploding in someone's face several times now. You could probably do it hundreds of times but it only takes one time for it to happen to get a serious burn.

BTW - I am in no way negating hissy's suggestion of the pumpkin diluted in the water - she is awesome and has excellent advice that is well worth listening to.

Thanks guys!! I will get some today!

Yosemite - I totally understand - You are very right - What happens is the water contains the residual heat and literally bursts!!!

Im always very careful - I will most likely use boiling water from the tap or kettle anyways!!!

I will let you know how the pumpkin goes!!

I think the exploding has something to do with metal being stuck in the water after it's heated in the microwave, right? Like if you went to stir the water with a spoon or a fork it might explode.

It can explode regardless - But if you have something in the water i.e. a plastic spoon, sugar, teabag - You don't get the same effect

To my knowledge it has nothing to do with "metal" being put in the water or metal in the water. It has to do with the manner in which the microwaves heat the water. Putting anything in the water like Jane said will prevent the water from exploding.
