... I'm seriously beginning to think there is a good reason for the Crazy Cat Lady stereotype.

I stopped fostering for my shelter (although I still volunteer) for a variety of reasons, and hesitently (because I am Very Picky) volunteered to foster for one of the million local rescue groups.

And now I'm being driven insane.

The woman who I am fostering for is VERY VERY ANTI-VET. She is Anti-Testing, etc. They do their own vaccinations, etc. Which weirds me out a little, but I understand that it is Very Cost Effective when dealing with the massive number of kittens in my area. And she does genuinely care about the animals.

Except that one of my kittens, Jane, got really sick after being spayed, vomiting a lot, being dehydrated. The woman gave her fluids. Jane was still dehydrated everyday. The woman kept giving her fluids. We took her to the vet and left her there overnight. I picked her up yesterday and she seemed great, but this morning she was sick again.

I took her to the vet asap and me and the vet decided to readmit her, maybe she just needed a little more work, and that just rehydrating her isn't enough. I call to tell the woman this and she says:

"What? Who will be there at night? Will she have a heating pad?" In the most disbelieving voice that intimated she didn't like what we were doing.

I wanted to scream at her IF SHE DIES OF STARVATION WHILE LAYING ON A HEATING PAD ALL WE HAVE IS A WARM CORPSE, DON'T WE?

She also doesn't want to do blood tests because "they'll cost $130 and what will they tell us?"

She then told me how the place I was taking William at to be adopted is swamped with kittens, who haven't properly been vetted.

But the BEST PART was when she said she liked the vet because he had "Positive energy, which is very important."

This is coming from the woman who REPEATEDLY tells me dying kitten stories, ex boyfriend cheating stories, and about ALL her personal tragedies. Lets talk about NOT positive energy.

I feel better because today I finally stood my ground and told her that I did what was comfortable for me, and if she wanted to call the vet she could.

It's just frusterating because I know rescues have a bad reputation for being crazy cat ladies, but sometimes they really really are (she's not the only one).

Sorry for the rant, don't worry, this is the last set of kittens I am fostering for her.

Wow she really does sound really nuts. Heating pad? What a joke! I'll tell her what she can do with her heating pad...

People like that really make me sick having a kitten die is one of the worst expriences I have been through.

Weird woman, too bad her strange beliefs may end up hurting innocent animals.

BTW, I heard the official limit for "Crazy Cat Lady" is 3 cats or more... I have 4.

"Only in California..." (said in an obviously foreign accent
) She does sound a bit of a nut and like she's really working at being a stereotype.

Sounds nut a serious nut-case to me.

If she's gonna do rescues and fostering she should realize she is not a vet and sometimes they are necessary.

Yeah, it is sort of a CA thing.
I mean, honestly I believe in positive energy too, but she does NOT have it. Nor will it cure mysterious illnesses.

I just had another maddening conversation with her. Man, I am not calling her unless I absolutely have to.

She does do fostering/rescue. But I think normally she is the only one doing it, so she's not driving someone else crazy.

Sorry if this offends, but I think almost all rescues are run by crazy cat ladies, whether they mean well or not.
I make all of our bengal adoptors sign a contract that, under no circumstances will they turn any of our bengals over to a rescue operation or the humane society in the event that they can no longer care for their cat.
They must return them to us.
I know the intent of rescues is to do good for the cats, but I don't want any of our cats going to places like that.

I honestly don't think that is terribly fair, there are a lot of bad terrible breeders out there too, right? And their intent isn't even to do good. But I don't assume all breeders are like that.

I've met some very nice wonderful people in rescue, but I tend not to write angry rants about them.
And there are plenty of kooks too...

You're right, it's probably not fair, but it's what I've seen. Certainly I've not seen them all and my response was a stereotype.

Bad breeders, definately. Bad pet owners....way too many to count. That's why we insist our bengals come back to us if there is ever any problem.
