"So Be It" email ...

Thread Starter
An old high school chum sent this on to me. I thought it was cute enough to pass on.

THE LAW IS THE LAW
So if the US government determines that it is against the law for the words "under God" to be on our money, then, so be it.

And if that same government decides that the "Ten Commandments" are not to be used in or on a government installation, then, so be it.

And since they already have prohibited any prayer in schools, on which they deem their authority, then so be it.

I say, "So be it," because I would like to be a law abiding US citizen.

I say, "So be it," because I would like to think that smarter people than I are in positions to make good decisions.

I would like to think that those people have the American publics' best interests at heart.

BUT, YOU KNOW WHAT ELSE I'D LIKE?

Since we can't pray to God, can't Trust in God and cannot Post His Commandments in Government buildings, I don't believe the Government and its employees should participate in the Easter and Christmas celebrations which honor the God that our government is eliminating from many facets of American life.

I'd like my mail delivered on Christmas, Good Friday, Thanksgiving and Easter. After all, it's just another day.

I'd like the US Supreme Court to be in session on Christmas, Good Friday, Thanksgiving & Easter as well as Sundays. After all, it's just another day.

I'd like the Senate and the House of Representatives to not have to worry about getting home for the "Christmas Break." After all it's just another day.

I'm thinking that a lot of my taxpayer dollars could be saved, if all government offices & services would work on Christmas, Thanksgiving, Good Friday and Easter.

It shouldn't cost any overtime since those would be just like any other day of the week to a government that is trying to be "politically correct."

In fact, I think that our government should work on Sundays (initially set aside for worshiping God...) because, after all, our government says that it should be just another day....!

What do you all think????

If this idea gets to enough people, maybe our elected officials will stop giving in to the minority opinions and begin, once again, to represent the 'majority' of ALL of the American people.

SO BE IT...........

Please Dear Lord, give us the help needed to keep you in our country!

'Amen' and 'Amen'

These are definitely things I never thought about but from now on I will be sure to questions those, in government, who support these changes.

Hey Chris - Thanks for posting this!

I don't know...I'm hesitant to agree with alllll of the things in this email, although I DO think calling it Xmas break, etc., is hypocritical. This is a pluralist country and is not, never has been, wasn't founded on the principals of being (contrary to popular belief) and hopefully never will be a 'Christian Nation'. Yes, I think it demeans other religions and those of us who don't participate in a religion to go around plastering the 10 Commandments all over government property. Yes, it always made me uncomfortable in school to say 'Under God' in the pledge, though, after Bush started this jingoistic patriotism trend, I stopped saying teh pledge in school (which is my right, and thankfully, I was never given any major trouble for it). Yes, I think it's dumb to assume that everyone in the entire country is ok with putting their work and lives on hold for a day just because it's someone else's religious holiday. I mean, I can name a few Christian people I know who would be upset about having the grocery store close early on Rosh Hashana or every night of Ramadan. Maybe what we should do is make it easier for everyone to take off, etc, when they needed to. Maybe then we'd inch closer to being truly tolerant and respectful of the diversity that makes this a great country.

Interesting. In my school district, Muslim groups are lobbying the School Board to include some of their holidays on the upcoming school calendar as non-school days. We have a couple of the Jewish holidays off, listed as non-student days. The proposed resolution for next year's calendar is that no religious holidays will be designated as non-school days, i.e. Good Friday. We will have off on a secular day, like Presidents' Day, instead. Thanksgiving is considered a secular holiday.

I love living in a Christian country. As someone else posted on another thread, 85% of this country is Christian. That is a pretty big majority if true.
As far as the 10 Commandments being posted "everywhere", I wish that were
true because if all people obeyed the 10 Commandment this country would be much better off.
I can see fighting evil, I don't understand fighting good, no matter what your religion or lack of.
The 10 Commandments are good for everyone, good words to live by.
Just because they were given to the Hebrews by God doesn't make them
less. The Torah has the first 5 books of the Old Testament which includes the 10 Commandments doesn't it?
Allah & God = the same.

So would the person who wrote this paper want the government to represent only the majority or does he/she want them to represent all of us. It can't be both! I would rather have my government represent ALL Americans instead of representing only Christian Americans. How unfair would that be to have a government who cares nothing about people who are different from themselves. It makes me think of how our government was in the days before women and minorities could vote. Back then, the government represented only the people who mattered...white men. Now, the author is saying that the government should represent only the people HE/SHE thinks matter and everyone else should either be ignored or be forced to believe exactly the way he or she does???? Holy Cow!

There's just a few problems with the premise of the email.

1. Kids can pray in school. They cannot be lead in prayer as a part of the school day. Big difference.

2. Except for when I worked for a Lutheran school, I've never gotten Good Friday off. Mail has always been delivered on Good Friday as far as I remember.

3. Thanksgiving is not a Christian holiday. It is a national holiday. If it were a religious holiday, many people all over the world would celebrate it on the same day.

4. At least in the schools around here, it isn't called Christmas Break anymore. It is Winter Break, that happens to correspond with Christmas and New Years.

5. The Supreme Court recently (last session) decided that the 10 Commandments could be displayed on government property, as long as it wasn't the sole historic or religious item on display.

Just because I'm feeling way too analytical this morning....

jcat is correct...my response was to the content of the e-mail and not to Captiva. I apologize if anyone thought otherwise!
